Can’t Remove Avira Internet Security 2012

Hi,
I can’t Remove Avira Internet Security 2012 form this WIN XP Pro PC.
See Attached print screen of the Windows application removal error.
Window’s ”Add or Remove Programs to Change/Remove programs” in the ”Windows Control Panel” repeatedly failed to remove this software.
Avira has no application specific ”removal ware” built in, as well.

Avira refuses to answer a support letter to them about this issue.
All I receive are canned responses assuring of tech support only to get the ball dropped repeatedly.
Their latest update of the program cause a BSOD error.
I had to reload a video driver it corrupted.
Which is why I opted to remove it before it happened again.

Their website ”help threads” are not specific with removal of this version of Avira Internet Security 2012, as well.
I don’t find the detailed specific answer I need there either.

A web search failed to chum up the answer, as well.

I must now manually remove this application and I am leary of doing so without technical guidance,
especially messing around in my systems hidden files and system registry.

Therefore, I thought I would ask the Pros here at Windows Secrets first and save myself a little misery. :^_^:

Sorry, many of the Security suite apps have a tool to assist with removing their suites from you PC. I assumed (with a name like that) that this was the same.

According to Avira Support there should be an uninstall option. It is possible that the installation did not finish when it was first installed. Perhaps installing again over your original installation will add the uninstall feature. I have had to do this in the past especially back in my XP days.

Try running CCleaner (free download) or msconfig (included with Windows). Both of these programs will show you a list of what loads upon startup, and will allow you to disable the items you don’t want loading. That should at least stop Avira from running.

That sounds like something I was looking for. Darn it should not be that hard to remove an app. It almost acts like the very thing it’s supposed to be protecting us from.

This seems a good reason to NOT install Avira.

I’ve tried Max Uninstaller. It failed to work. A waste of time.
It initiates Windows Uninstaller.
Which has already failed.
That is what is at this link you provided Jagworld:

msconfig identifies programs loading,
If I could figure out which ones are Avira.
AND disable Avira parts that don’t effect other programs on this PC rendering it useless.
That is the scenario I can’t afford happening as this is the only system I have to access the internet for information.
In order to re-install I must re-purchase the Avira program and re-install the latest version which gave the system the BSOD by altering my video driver I just fixed.
I’m not going there either.

Guys, experience with the removal of this program is imperative to do it safely without possible harm to this system.
That is what is in need here.
Can we try again?

By the way, that description of the original Avira program to download and presumably install/uninstall doesn’t line up with my original installation exe file at 1.88MB in size…downloaded back in 2010….
not 79.4 MB’s in size as described in that linked ”http://howto-uninstall.windowsuninstaller.org/uninstall-avira-internet-security-2012-program-download-avira-internet-security-2012-antivirus-software-removal-tool-free-antivir-for-windows-removal-guide/” post.

I always keep the original exe files downloaded in a separate Avira folder for later reference.

I’m glad I did now with this crap happening.
That apparently is a baited info trap to get you to download that MAX Uninstaller program.

Googling the Avira Internet Security file name turns this up:

So, I can’t trust that removal page at all since the actual file size is 112.64 MB’s according to this Google search. That removal page is a scam just to get you to buy Max Uninstaller.

After this stuff with Avira refusing to rid itself from my system, It’s having a max thumbs down from this user for sure.

It is absolutely crazy that this should be so hard, I agree, thumbs down to Avira. Norton used to be like this, but then Norton actually released a Norton Removal Tool that assists with removing Norton from a PC.

Brute force. Stop the Avira executable. Perhaps remove it from the Start Up using What’s In Startup. Deleted all the folders containing the app. Use CCleanerto both to delete temp stuff and to cleanup the registry. Be careful what you eliminate. Delete only those items related to Avira.

You can then also go to the Registry Editor (Run, regedit.exe) Do a File Search for anything that might be left over.

This might be an involved process, but it should work. Then never recommend Avira to your family and friends!

Avira is not in my Windows XP start-up folder. 😡
Or I’d remove it.

I’ll try this program you recommend and see if it shows up there.
The main reason for removing is so it won’t conflict with Avast A/V I plan to replace it with.
AND hogging system resources, it does an excellent job of that too.

I’ll try the CCleaner, as well.

Anything else we’ve maybe have forgotten to mention??
Tips for searching the registry?

I’ll post back in a while when I’ve had time to do all of this.

Unfortunately the Start Up folder is only one place of many that apps load themselves. That’s why What’s In Startup is so nice. It finds and lists them all

For searching the registry, look for items that say Avira. CCleaner will probably find most. Be very careful with CCleaner. Make sure you know what you are choosing to remove. Make sure it has to do with Avira, and perhaps other apps you have removed in the past. About the only time I use the registry cleaner portion is after uninstalling apps.

Jag, unfortunately if the app is not listed in the Add and Remove Programs list, Revo Uninstaller may not see it either. I suppose it would not hurt to try Revo.

Now I get this prompt stating Avira is disabled in the registry after using the start-up program to disable it.
Ahhhh duhhh….
Well, I’m also getting spammed to death to upgrade with a new version of this POS program.

Everything I’m reading about uninstalling Avira states there should be an entry in Add/Remove programs. This is why I thing the original installation did not complete properly. In the past I have had to reinstall a stubborn app in order to be able to uninstall it.

Did you use What’s in Startup to stop Avira from loading at startup?

Here are manual removal instructions I just found.

Print the instructions then disconnect from the internet (don’t want to make yourself vulnerable).

A Google searchshows some other sites as well.

Add/Remove programs failed, that was in the first post with a screen shot of the error.

Since I have a paid version, I must re-up and fork over cash for a re-install.
I’m Not going there.

My version is Avira Internet Security 2012, manual instructions for removal found here after a search at your link provided:

It’s essentially the same.
That registry cleaner download will help.
It looks as if we’ll have to go this route today when time permits.
We have to be in safe mode for that to work…it figures.

Hi guys, just a heads up on the manual uninstall. That worked. I waited this long to make sure nothing creeped back in. On the video driver corruption, Avira was the cause of that, as well. Just a heads up here, Dell systems have what is called a “Driver Reset Tool” that fixed this system right up. It’s under All Programs/Dell Accessories/Driver Reset Tool. No more BSOD. Eva thing seems back to normal.
