Caps control in cross-reference (Word 2000)

In a document where Heading 1 is “ARTICLE 1”, when you cross-reference this heading, of course it appears in its all-cap format. Is there any way to tell it to appear as “Article 1” (i.e., initial-capped)? It just looks a little funny in its all-caps splendor in the middle of a paragraph.

Hi Russ:
Just use the formatting switch that you want:
* lower – changes all letters in the field result to lower case
* Caps – capitalizes the first letter of each Word (like Title Case)
* FirstCap – capitalizes only the first word
* upper – you guessed it

Sometimes it’s necessary to use more than one formatting switch. Because FirstCap only only operates on the first letter of the phrase, all other letters are not formatted. Therefore, if you wanted to change ARTICLE ONE to Article one, using * FirstCap, by itself wouldn’t work & the result would still be ARTICLE ONE . In this case, you can combine formatting switches by using

* lower * FirstCap

This changes the field result to lowercase & then capitalizes the first letter of the phrase. Note that if you reversed the order of the switches, you would end up with all lowercase.
