• CD display in My Computer (CP Pro SP2)

I have a user with a relatively new Dell Latitude D620 with a standard CD unit
which recently started refusing to display the contents of CD disks in My
Computer although right clicking the CD in the tree of My Computer allows him
to select copy and the disks can be copied to the desktop, for example, from
where he can open the contents.

This is XP Pro SP2 and different CD units have been swapped in the media bay
(or whatever Dell calls it) with same results.

I am checking BIOS versions now but am curious if anyone has seen this type
of failure to display the data but XP can copy the data, etc.

    TIA,

On a left click, is there any error message? Have you checked the event logs?

        Thanks.

Nothing in the event logs but I have asked client to attempt to view a disk and note the time so I can go back in and review. I don’t recall seeing any message upon left click when I actually stopped by earlier. I have asked client to confirm this.

On a left click, does the CD even spin up? Have you installed a new version of any CD software such as Nero, Roxio, etc.?

No, the drive does not spun up with left clicking, however, it will spin up when the client places a disk in the drive. Client says he has not installed any software on this machine at all.

              I found the following

CD contents not being displayed by Windows – FIX
In windows explorer right click the cd drive and select properties, and click on recording. Click the check box to Enable CD recording on the drive and it should work.

in the thread at CD contents not being displayed by Windows.

So far, I don’t see the “recording” option you and the article mention. Right clicking the CD in either Windows Explorer or My Computer and selecting properties does not show me a recording option on any of the tabs.

I am checking this on my desktop but will pull out my laptop which is not the same model as the client’s but I would be surprised if I find a recording option listed for a standard CD unit.

Also, check to see if there is any version of Nero or Roxio installed already (i.e. came with the machine).

Not a burner so no versions of either software package.

No errors appear and nothing in the event log for the time when the last read was attempted.
