I’m trying to read a SQL CE 2.0 database on a symbol Pocket PC. It is stored as an .sdf file in the file system.

The device settings say Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Version 4.21.1088
    Processor Intel PXA 270

Has anyone worked with CE 2.0 databases? If so do you have a tool or app that will read the database on the device?

This is a corporate inventory app. I do not have the luxury of being able to upgrade the database to a more current version.
I’ve tried Access, SQL Server 2005 import, notepad (mostly binary characters, but some XML looking stuff).
I’ve tried google searching so please dont post a reply with links copied off your google search.

If you must be able to read the database on the Pocket PC, there don’t seem to be any current alternatives. However I do see people claiming to be able to read that file format using Visual Studio 2010 on a desktop. Would that help?

You might also want to post your question at http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Forum137-1.aspx or http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Forum323-1.aspx – those forums are focused on developers of compact edition, and will likely have much more experience in that arena.

Thanks Wendell. Oh, so close! One of the options in VS 2010 is File > Open > (data type) .sdf. When I try to open that file I get an error:

This is not a valid SQL Server Compact Database file or this file version is not supported by current SQL Server Compact Engine.”
[*]So do I need an earlier version of SQL Server Compact Engine? if so, where do I get it?
[*]I have a data provider for .NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5. Do i need to install a data provider for .NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server Compact 2.0?
[*]One 3rd party vendor (primeworks.com) support said I can only open that database from the device while it’s on the device.
