How come I can’t delete cells in a SS that someone sent me? It only allows for rows. But when I copy the info to a new SS, I can.

Perhaps teh worksheet is protected. Under tools – protection does it say “protect sheet” or “unprotect sheet”?

Is the worksheet protected? (Look at Tools | Protection – if the first item in the submenu is Unprotect sheet, it’s currently protected).

Otherwise – what happens if you try to delete cells? Do you get an error message? If so, what does it say?

I have seen that “Protect”, “unlocked” and “locked” cells was checked off. However, the creator of the worksheet didn’t put a password on it. Maybe it was given to someone who protected it. Is there some way I can strip that? (I also unlocked all the cells).

You can remove the protection by tools – protection – unprotect sheet. If the worksheet is unprotected, the status of the locked/unlocked nature of the cell does not matter. It is only relevant for protected sheets

What exactly did the first item in the Tools | Protection submenu say? “Protect sheet…” or “Unprotect sheet…”? Or perhaps more important, what does it say now? (Don’t select the option, only look at it).
If it says “Protect sheet”, the sheet is currently not protected.
If it says “Unprotect sheet”, the sheet is currently protected.

It said “protect sheet”. I knew that meant it was unprotected, but it still did not allow me to sort or delete cells.

I may have been mistaken about the sort capability which is working, but the original sheet doesn’t support cell deletion. I have been able to make a new SS which does it. But the original doesn’t, could it be different versions? (I’m on 2003, could be that one is 2007). In any event I’m okay.

I’m afraid I’d have to see the workbook.
