Certain Wndows Updates Will Not Install

A good while back, I was installing Windows Updates when I lost power. I hit the “Stop Update” link and powered down. Had a few hick ups getting up and running had to use a Restore Point. Everything works fine, BUT there are about 10 updates, 7 critical that won’t install. I have been able to install updates since then, but not those 10 (see below).

I’ve tried all the suggestion provided with error message 80070490, tried using the install disk, go told I’ve got a more current version. Ran the Windows trouble shooter and got one item that it couldn’t fix. See error msg below.

You’ve probably already tried http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7 but it includes some other bits lower down the page.

They probably include the Update Readiness Tool but you could try running the standalone version. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool

While I haven’t checked to see what those WUs relate to, if any are for .NET Framework you could run the repair tool while trying the updates again. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135

You could also see what a sfc /scannow run as an admin from the command prompt reports.

The newer version error you are getting with your install disk is probably because it doesn’t have SP1.

You can download your version from http://www.w7forums.com/threads/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads.12325/page-2#post-124821 and use http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool to create a bootable USB or DVD.

If the sfc /scannow reports that it is unable to repair some files then you can use the new install disk to perform an offboot sfc /scannow by booting up with the disk and when offered, select Repair your Computer then select Command Prompt in the Recovery Environment and enter these commands –

bcdedit |find “os device” (that’s a Pipe symbol before find (uppercase ))

Using whichever partition letter it gives enter (assuming C )

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=C:Windows

I often have to deal with Windows Updates errors on customers’ computers. Until about three years ago I would have to use several manual fixes, but then found Tweaking.com Windows Repair (All In One). It also fixes a number of other common problems with Windows.

Coochin forgot to mention to allow the pre-checkeds to also run, along with clicking fix Windows Updates.

Gents – thank you all very much. I thought I take the easy way out and go with Coochin suggestion. Ran the update and got told “no joy” can’t install Windows updates. Waiting on their tech support to call back. Figured if I’d paid for the software, I should get my money’s worth.

What does a sfc /scannow report and have you tried any of my other suggestions ?

Have you also checked for any related Error events in Event Viewer with a date and time stamp when the WUs failed ?

Good folks – sorry I delayed in getting back to you. I did get the right Win7 wish SP1 disc. Used that to run repair and got all updates in place. The help here was great. Unfortunately the period with those updates refusing to install left me vulnerable to a lot of problems, which are resolved, but are also a long boring tale of woe and intrigue.
