Changes could not be saved

Hi,

I am using Excel 97, Win95 in a Novell network. With some of my colleagues I have a shared directory on the network. We often use the same Excel files, make changes, make personal copies to our harddrive and save it. I now have the following problem: when I open a frequently used xls file, make my changes and want to save it under a different name on my harddisk, I am prompted with the following Excel message:

“Your changes could not be saved to ‘MyFile.xls’, but were saved to a temporary document named ’70A80000′. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name”

Even if I follow this advise, I cannot rename the document. Other colleagues, using the same file don’t have this problem, so it is related to my personal computer and probably the settings of Excel on my PC.

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

Thanks Leif, I’ll send this information to our network administrator. Strange though that it did not occur before and not everyone has the problem. Even now, after restarting, everything seems to be allright again. But this does surely not guarantee that the problems may not come back.

I’ve had this, and it’s a huge nuisance +++.

I’m running in Excel 2000; I managed to solve it (eventually) by saving it to HTML (which saves all graphics, macros etc); then opening the HTML, and saving it back to xls.

It seems like there’s some sort of corruption which appears in a worksheet; once it appears, it’s very hard to get rid of.

Before XL2K, I think I was able to get around the problem by copying all worksheets to another workbook (using “Move of Copy sheet” rather than copy/paste using the clipboard), then copying all macros to the new workbook.

Once I had the problem on one worksheet, I found it cropping up on a few more until I created the new clean copies.

According to our network administrator, it seemed to be a conflict with the McAfee virus protection, as mentioned in the microsoft url provided by Leif. Thanks again for the fast response. Don’t know, Geoff, if this was the origin of your problems too?

I don’t know what caused my problems. I was saving onto a local hard drive.

I did investigate those MS KB articles at the time. The suggestions of just saving the files back as xls did not work for me. The processes I’ve mentioned did. It certainly gave the appearance of corruption.

The last time we had virus checking problems (in Word) we sent the offending template to the software house. They did not receive the Word attachment, because their incoming mail was being protected by a rival product.
