Changing format to allow Excel to CSV with commas and quote marks

I’m using Windows 7 64-bit and MS Office Home and Student 2007 version and need help with a format issue. For a major project I’m working on I need to export from an Excel spreadsheet to both tab delimited UTF-8 txt files and also CSV files with comma between fields and quotes around each field. I’ve been able to export to txt and then convert that file to UTF-8 using Notepad, but have had no luck setting up the CSV export.

The tab delimited UTF-8 files allow us to upload meta data to images using Photo Mechanic. The CSV comma delimited with quotes around the fields allows us to upload meta data to a website using Omeka. As we will be doing 22,000 images over the next year, reducing the steps is very important to speeding up the work flow.

I can open the Excel spreadsheet with Open Office’s Calc and then save as a CSV with the needed formating, but haven’t figured out how to do it in Excel.

The only instructions I can find are for Windows Vista, but they don’t match what I’m seeing on Windows 7.

Appreciate any instructions on how to do this or even if it is doable.

I haven’t done something like that in ages so I can’t give you specific instructions other than to say that it is indeed doable. I also don’t have a copy of MS Office 2007, I’m used to working in Open Office. That makes me wonder why you don’t just do this in OO since it is working for you? Apparant;y in 2007 and up, its become a bit of a pain to do this.

Also, the instructions you found would not have been specific to Vista, but to a version of MS Excel. A given version of Excel will work the same whether its on XP, Vista, or Win7. That being the case, this should probably be in the Spreadsheet forum.

Wrong guess as to which forum. I know that making the change is done in the operating system, so went with that.

For Doc Brown, I had thought about using Open Office exclusively, but it didn’t work with an important aspect. I’ve spent the last couple of months learning a lot about tab delimited, CSV, UTF-8, imaging, digital cameras, color separation, book cradles, photo organizing software, Library of Congress terms, Dublin Core Meta Data Standards, and local history issues that I can’t remember exactly what the problem was, but it was a show stopper.
