I have been using Thunderbird for several years and have a number of messages and contacts I need to keep.  If I change to another email client, I have two questions:

    1. What would you suggest I use as an email client?
    2. Which email clients can I use to keep what I have (contacts and messages)?  That is, which clients are best to change from Thunderbird?

I am using Windows 10 (22H2) on a robust computer.

I (remotely) helped a non-techie friend move from Thunderbird to eM Client a couple of years ago and she is very happy with eM Client. The importing of files from Thunderbird was relatively straight forward. The free version of eM Client is limited to just two accounts.

I was going to give eM a whirl but the free version won’t do more than 1 or 2 accounts (I have 5 or 6) and I’m not sure if Pro continues to get security updates without upgrading – lifetime upgrades doubles the cost.

The is an old-school email client out there called Pegasus Mail.  Your reasons for wanting to move away from Thunderbird would help me offer guidance on whether Pegasus Mail could be a suitable replacement.  Edit:  Oh wait, you posted about the slow startup.  Is that the only reason?

I don’t recommend Pegasus Mail to anyone who is not a techie (Thunderbird is what I recommend to them). It is extremely configurable.  It can handle numerous hosted email accounts (POP3, IMAP, SMTP).  It can be multi-user, each user with their own local mailbox directory.  Alternatively, a user can have multiple-identites (different configurations) within the same mailbox directory.  It has limited HTML email support.  It can render HTML formatted messages but has limited formating capabilities (no smilies).  Support is via a forum and/or a listserv list.

Transferring contacts should not be a problem if Thunderbird has an export function.  As for messages, there is currently an active discussion on the support forum about that.  Hopefully that will provide an answer soon.
