Hello All. I have an old Pentium Pro 200 setup with Win ME for my grandson. He plays games, etc. I keep the screen resolution at
800×600 usually. Somehow, he or the “ghost” changed the resolution to 640×480 and now I can’t get it to go back. I have changed
it numerous times but it keeps going back to 640×480. The only thing I can figure is that some game he or the “ghost” loaded
permanently changed it. Maybe it is changed in the registry ?
    Can anyone help ?
    Thanks

You didn’t say if the games played are of the DOS variety or not, but here’s something to check. Look in the Config.Sys and Autoexec.Bat files to see if one of the games has addeed a MODE setting command or two. Failing that, can you check the web site of whomever made the video card and see what their latest driver is? Maybe re-installing the video driver will get you back control over the settings (something could be corrupt in the current). When you go into display properties and re-set the resolution, does it look like it “takes” or does it immediately change it back to the lower setting? Let us know…..

Not sure if they are dos but looks like it. I checked the autoexec and config files but no mode= command anywhere.
It seems the error is coming from VGA.DRV and also one from DIRAPI.DLL (which is part of Active X)
Since I have another machine with WinME, I am going to copy over the two files (hopefully) on the other machine and see what
happens. If you have any other ideas, let me know.
        Thanks

Again here. To resolve the issue, I re-loaded the OLD Win95 video drivers, even though it was running WinME.
That got me back to the proper resolution. Thanks for all the help. I guess next task will be to get the newer WinME drivers for the
          ATI video card.

Have you checked the Color Quality setting? The amount memory on the video card could be the limiting factor, especially on an older PC.

If, for example you had it in 256 colour mode with 800 x 600 resolution, and the game wanted to run a higher colour mode, that may have dropped the resolution to 640 x 480. Now, when you try to change back to a higher resolution, it won’t let you while the higher quality colour mode is still selected. If that’s the cause, it’s easy to fix by reducing the colour quality first, and then increasing the screen resolution.
