• Chrome opened new URL by itself

Longtime desktop computer user, even before MSDOS. Now, I’m using Win10Pro v1809 and using the wait protocol for updating monthly recommended by AskWoody. Yesterday, I was playing Cribbage Deluxe by Random Salad Games from an administrator account since it uses my Microsoft account to sign in and save game statistics to the Cloud. The game appears to use Chrome as its guts, but I cannot see the web address while playing.
Suddenly, a new URL opened with a phishing notice stating that 3 viruses had been found and I had 4 minutes to “Click Here” before the damage becomes permanent. The site had Microsoft logos, but the URL contained microsoft.com followed by myriad characters. I wish I had saved the URL, but my first instinct was to quickly close the browser!
My question: Since when can Chrome open and display a new web page all by itself?! Has anyone else seen this recently? Roy

Does this game display advertisements while in use? What other application was open? (This could have happened without being an Administrator, but running as Administrator all of the time is not a good idea.)

Chrome doesn’t open and display a new web page all by itself, the fake fishing/malware did.
You should use some good adblocker (uBlock Origin..) and a good browser/app protector (HitMan Pro Alert..). Microsoft’s Defender doesn’t qualify to the tasks.

Anon – No other apps were running and the game does not show ads. I use an admin account about one hour a day. My everyday account is a local non-admin.

      alex5723 – Thanks.

b – That’s it! I just don’t understand how it popped up by itself in a game that I have used regularly for about 2 years. The only places to click are game options, but I did not do that yesterday.

The company blurb says most games are free but they have earned lots of money from them. Maybe this is how they make their money?

      cheers, Paul
