As of today MS has “launched” the Chrome version of Edge (Chredge) via the Windows Update channel. It will be offered automatically to those who click on  the”Check for Updates” button within the Windows Update application. There’s a KB to go with it, KB4567409, which was published today. It contains basic guidance on installing Chredge via WU should you choose to do so. The KB also includes a couple of important prerequisites you’ll need to have installed before proceeding to install Chredge.

Unless I’ve read it incorrectly, the KB mentions that updates for Chredge will be separate from any updated for Windows itself, so you may not need any ESU license or abbodi86’s script to keep it updated. The default is for it to automatically update itself without user input. This option is offered during the installation routine, from what I’ve read in the bulletin.

My question for the masses here…is it worth it to take the plunge and install it in order to use it in place of IE, given that IE is so woven into the OS it really can’t be uninstalled?

I haven’t been too sure where to look to view any debate there may have been here with regards to Chredge vs. Edge vs (gulp) IE.

Given that it’s based upon Chromium, how does one go about dialing back the telemetry that’s inherently built into the browser, so that it’s not so nosy?

Before anyone says anything, IE is NOT my primary browser. I’ve just been thinking of using Chredge in place of IE for those sites that simply won’t render properly in my usual browser.

Yes, it’s both more secure and more compatible than IE11.

Feels somewhat strange to type this, but – relative to Google (Chrome) – Microsoft (Edge) is actually somewhat helpful here…

      Hope this helps.

        No:

This update will not change your default browser

What would you need IE for in this day and age?

I know some corporate stuff in some setups still relies on it, and it is for them that MS keeps the creaky old thing around.  From the context, it seems that you are talking about general purpose browsing of sites out there for public use, not closed corporate setups, and I am very curious to know what sites out there would still demand the use of an obsolete browser that even its maker says is not a browser anymore, but a legacy compatibility solution.

I’ve never used IE for anything except Windows Updates back on XP, and I can’t think of any issues related to that– and certainly not in the last five or ten years.  I would not have run ActiveX back in the day anyway, even on IE, and a little bit of weird rendering would not have been an issue.  If there were any such hitches, they weren’t serious enough for me to remember them.  That’s just my experience, though, and others may have seen things I didn’t, of course.

Now that I use Linux, IE isn’t even an option, and it still hasn’t been a problem.  Chrome has been the standard for quite some time, and I usually read about people trying a Chromium based browser when Firefox fails to work properly, but not IE.

The check reader and its tie in with the banking deposit for my Home Owners Assn requires IE11 with modifications in the Trusted Zone settings. It will not work on any other browser.

Every time there is a Win10 update (currently on 1909. previously 1809, 1803, 1709….) I have to go in and reset the Trusted Zone, as the install puts all the settings back to the default.

For Windows 7 users who were in Group B, are there any concerns related to installing Edge?

I.E. is the best browser out there! It does everything you need without eating a ton of ram! It’s fully compatible with all internet technologies and even has ad blocking capabilities if you now how to use them! ActiveX is just like JavaScript running, just like any other browser, if you don’t like it, just disable it! But don’t complain if your sites don’t work any more!

Hi Guys. I’m running Win7 Pro (ESU) and yesterday (21 June) I installed MS Edge as advised by a well-meaning friend on the basis that I.E.11 ought not to be used online if possible. As FF is my default browser, I thought OK, I have nothing to lose and proceeded to install Edge.

Following installation I had 2 extended browsing sessions (using FF) at my favorite blog plus a few searches.

Today, and just before doing a system image, I ran CC Cleaner and got a surprise at the results.  Edge featured prominently.  See attached screen-shot.  What’s going on here?

      Information greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Don’t know, but possibly related to Edge browser install and/or update check?

I’d be curious to know this: after “Cleaning Complete” and before rebooting, if you browse again to your favorite blog using FF, and then run CCleaner again, do similar entries reappear in cleaning results?

after “Cleaning Complete” and before rebooting

Thanks, but its is a bit late for that I’m afraid as I had to get that System Image done and copied to other drives. When I sign off from here, I shall adopt your suggestion and let you know.

      Short answer:  No !

Looks like your suggestion of the data being related to “…Edge browser install and/or update check..” is about right.  Thank you for taking the trouble to reply.
