AskWoody_MVPJuly 26, 2023 at 4:59 am #2575851I’m old enough to remember how AskWoody told us over and over again for many years that we should all ditch Windows and buy a Chromebook:
My #1 recommendation: DON’T GET WINDOWS. Get a Chromebook.
Y’all know how much I prefer Chromebooks to Windows computers.
And if you got a Chromebook, you can smile and whistle a happy tune
Meanwhile, my much disparaged Surface Go from around the same era (which came with the also maligned Windows 10 in S Mode) is still getting the latest Windows 11 updates for the forseeable future.
Meet the $399 Surface Go
…
Of course I don’t recommend it. You had any doubts? The Microsoft Surface Go, by contrast, is guaranteed support through… I’m not sure if Windows 10 Home in S mode is being actively supported, really, even now. [January 22, 2020]

At the office, I’m not willing to do the same thing. I still hope that Microsoft will do the Windows 10 Extended patches.

AskWoody MVPJuly 26, 2023 at 10:52 am #2575906I’ve had an abiding aversion to anything Google, Apple or any other closed hardware/software ecosystem. Unfortunately, with the demise of Windows Phone support I was left with a choice between Apple or Android smart phones in order to maintain connectivity between my PC and phone. I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S21 5G which is now on Android Version 13 and One UI Version 5.1 and set for automatic software updates.
I use the Firefox browser and DuckDuckGo search engine on my S21 and have Microsoft 365, OneDrive and Windows Defender installed as well, and use Phone Link to connect with Windows 11.
Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things. We were all once "Average Users". -
