Have friends whose U-verse equipment got replaced, and they asked me to see if I could get the Chromecast they have on one of their TV’s working again (it was looking for the old U-verse Residential Gateway). I downloaded and ran the Installer program for Chromecast on their Win10 laptop. It found the Chromecast OK and also the RG name and the wireless password. But when I told the installer to send that info to the Chromecast, the laptop’s wireless connection immediately broke and an error appeared that the info could not be saved to the Chromecast. I had to go through a Connect procedure to get the laptop’s wireless connection restored. This happened every time I tried the Chromecast intall.

I brought the Chromecast home and tried the install on MY U-verse network, using my Win10 desktop which has a wireless connection to the network. The install went fine: no interruption of the laptop’s connection, and the Chromecast is working like a champ. I’m planning on printing out the configuration info from my RG and then sometime this weekend going back to their house and see if I can spot any differences in their configuration, but I’m wondering if this kind of problem is familiar to anyone here.

I don’t have any experience of Chromecast but the conflict could be in the registry and you would need to delete the keys for the Profiles and Signatures.

I don’t have Win 10 either 🙂 but after creating a restore point, I would think that by going Start – type regedit – press enter – accept the UAC then navigate –

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/CurrentVersion/NetworkList/Profiles

Clicking on those keys should show which to right click on and Delete, then do the same in Signatures/Unmanaged.

Close up the registry sections and reboot to effect and try the install again.

As you didn’t have the older version installed on your machine, it could have been caused by an IP address conflict.

Are the registry edits for removing an IP address conflict, or a different problem?

They will remove the profile of the connection from the computer so that when it is set up again it will be as a first time connection as you found with your machine, but as when making any changes to the registry, always create a restore point first.

Finally got back to work on this problem yesterday. There were entries in Profiles for the Uverse gateway, the Chromecast, and Network. Not sure if I was supposed to delete them all, so I just deleted the entry for the Chromecast. Couldn’t find Signatures. Rebooted the PC, but ran into same error with the Chromecast setup.

I’d also found how to reset a Chromecast back to “out of the box” condition and tried that. Beginning to think there’s something wrong with the unit, as the indicator light on the unit didn’t behave like it was supposed to during a reset. The owner just bought it in December and thinks he still has the receipt, so I may just have him return it for another.

You can leave the Network one as that is created when you first wire up, but if it has been factory reset and not hooked up to the ‘net then those keys will no longer be present.

Signatures in my Toshiba Win 7 laptop is directly below Profiles.

If it still isn’t behaving after the reset then returning it is probably the best option.

        Sudo,
I bought Chromecast about a year ago, installed it on a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 8.1 and watched a couple of operas from Glyndebourne, but the picture quality on our 32” TV was too dark to be enjoyable, probably due to the laptop being 6 years old.

Making another attempt some months later, the Chromecast icon had disappeared, making it impossible to project anything to the TV. Chromecast was removed and reinstalled, but still no icon.

This thread has given a possible solution, and having determined which is the Chromecast profile, there remains the question of should it be deleted before or after uninstalling CC? Would removing it first make it impossible to uninstall CC fully, whereas reinstalling with the current profile in place presumably changes nothing. I eagerly await your expert opinion.
Hopefully I will be excused for high-jacking the thread for a related issue. Following the above problems my wife bought a 7” Samsung Galaxy Tab S, hoping this being newer would give a better picture on the TV, but after attempting to download CC it doesn’t show anywhere. Not having found any other use for a tablet, it remains unused. CC claims it claims to work with PCs and tablets, so am I doing something wrong, or is this an issue with Samsung?

I have a Galaxy Tab S and it works fine on it, so I would assume that it’s not the tablet. Are you sure it hasn’t downloaded? Look at the all apps pages and it should be there under Google Cast.

Not having used a Tablet, I don’t know where programs download to, unlike with a Win 7 laptop where they normally default to the Downloads folder.

I would uninstall it then check to see if the Profiles remain, however you would need to find it to uninstall it.

Do you have a 3rd party uninstaller which should be able to find it – is there a Programs and Features or similar where apps can be found ?

This article then may help you to set it up after its reinstall – https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/2998456?hl=en-GB

Paul, on an Android tablet if you decide you want an app, you get it from the Google Store and install it from there (it downloads then installs). You uninstall it from the same place, so looking for the Google Cast on the store will tell you that you have (or not) that app installed.

On the tablet you can open settings, click on the application tab and see all the apps you have. You can clear their cache, clear data, force a stop or uninstall from there as well. If GeorgeLee can’t see it in either of those places he hasn’t installed it (or downloaded it).

Thanks for that. It looks as though there are no apps. Application manager shows only Galaxy apps at 36MB, with the only options of Force Stop, Uninstall Updates and Disable.
I’m fairly certain there was no mention of Chromecast in the store, so I downloaded from the Google website – or thought I had.

It will be some days before I can try again, as I need to reread the manual, at the moment I don’t even know how to switch it off, or my log on details.

      Sudo,
Not sure whether your second and third paragraphs are referring to the laptop or tablet, if the former there is no need to search, as it’s in CP, Programmes and Features, last installed 15/09/2015. Just to be clear, are you saying to uninstall CC, then delete the profile and signature files if still there, then reinstall?

Sorry to be stupid, but it’s best to be sure of the correct procedure to avoid further complications, and I know you can always be relied upon.

Thanks for the vote of confidence although in this case, I’m not sure it is warranted 🙂

Yes, uninstall it first then check the registry.

Is the previous install expired as to any paid for subscription ?

I’m not sure if we are talking about a laptop or tablet, but when a program is in Programs and Features it’s also either in Program Files or Program Files (x86) on a Win 7 x64 machine.

If you can find that then right click on it then select Open in new window and there should be an Application that you can double click on which should start it up as though double clicking on a desktop icon.

That can then be pinned to the taskbar if you have one.

It may also include its Uninstaller which you can activate the same way.

Everything worked out fine, after a few alarms along the way.

Chromecast was uninstalled, the profile and signature deleted, and CC said it would be installed shortly, which lasted until I remembered to switch from Firefox to Chrome – rather like MS insisting on IE to download updates.

The laptop was unplugged, taken downstairs and it worked, giving an excellent picture on the TV, so it’s not too old as had been assumed.

And there was a surprise bonus!

Over the past year I must have spent well over 10 hours unsuccessfully trying to get the TV to work on the network. It was possible to access all the pictures on my desktop, proving that the connection was operational, but was never able to connect to a video, or files on the PC.

This evening, after the success with CC I said to my wife that tomorrow I must have another go at getting the network to show something other than pictures, she could not remember seeing any of our photos on the TV – she must be losing her memory – so I demonstrated, but selecting ‘pictures’ would not work, nor would music. Turning to Media Server the pix were there, Video showed the usual list of genres, titles, etc, which show nothing, but this time I selected ‘all videos’ right at the bottom of the list. There were all the videos downloaded to my PC and not transferred to DVD.

What a relief! No need to learn how to use the tablet or bother with Chromecast. No more spending 3 or 4 hours cramped in my tiny study, designed as a nursery and still decorated as such, my desk behind us, the computer table in front and bookcases either side, with barely enough space to stretch our legs.

Many thanks to access and Sudo for ensuring that in future we can watch in comfort.

Glad you got it sorted. I will have to see if I too can get the photos et al from our PCs through the network.

Glad to see that things have worked out for you, George.
