Clean Windows 8/10 Install Problems

Greetings,
I’m attempting a clean Windows installation on a test PC and having no success – same problem with Windows 8 as now with Windows 10 “beta.”
The system has 6 GB RAM, dual core 2.5 GHz processor – reasonably good hardware for this purpose.

The hard drive is an old but healthy Seagate 500 GB drive, formatted NTFS. Using the Computer Management utility when attached to my main desktop, it says the (now external) drive is “Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)” with 465.76 GB free (empty).

Installed in the test system, I am booting from a DVD drive (BIOS is set to boot from this drive first).
This DVD was made as follows:
Downloaded the Windows ISO file (for Windows 10, but I had the same problem with Windows 8 a while back, so that isn’t relevant, I think.)
Burned the ISO to a DVD which now shows these files (setup.exe; bootmgr.efi; bootmgr; autorun.inf) and folders (boot; efi; sources; support)
These look right to me…

Booting the test system with the HD connected and the DVD in the drive, it prompts me in a DOS screen to choose “1.” or “2.” to start.
“2.” does nothing; “1.” reads the DVD, shows the blue Windows 8/10(?) logo, then after a couple of minutes the circle of dots chase each other for
maybe 15 minutes more. There is a little HD activity, then the screen goes blank with no more drive activity, either HD nor DVD. There is no indication of Windows 8 (or10) running an installation routine.

I’m about to tear my hair out. What am I doing wrong?

HD partition not right?
DVD not really a good Windows install disk?
Wrong phase of the moon?

I sure could use some help… most humbly with gratitude.

I’d boot from a CD/DVD/USB with a formatting utility and delete the existing partitions on the disk.
Then boot from the Win 10 install disk and go from there.
Not sure this will work but it’s worth a try. HTH :cheers:

I think I got it figured out. (Thanks, RetiredGeek – I did try your solution, but no cigar.)
The mobo is an Intel DP965LT with LGA775 CPU slot that was born as a DIY Windows XP system. Intel’s website says this board is not compatible with either Windows 7 or 8.
That’s strange because in an old setup I had it dual-booting to XP and Win 7 (32-bit). But I found I could not install Win 7-64, even on a new SSD, and never checked on the mobo compatibility. Big mistake, huge.
So now I’m hunting for a new mobo/CPU/RAM combination that won’t break the budget. Case & PS are fine; plenty of HDDs to choose from, LOL.
