I have a different but possibly related problem.
Under XP I sent a long Word 2003 (.doc) file to a publisher. My editor added her comments and sent the file back in Word 2007 (.docx) format. By that time I had moved to a new laptop using Word 2007 under Windows 7 Home Premium.
In the returned file, all the apostrophes (’) were converted into equals signs (=), double open quotes (“)changed to A and double close quotes(”) to @.

The font is Shruti but changing this to Times New Roman doesn’t make any difference.
Almost all of the document is in the Normal style. There are two instances of the style called No Spacing. None of the other styles are used.
These are the particulars of the Normal style:
Font: (Default) Times New Roman, 12 pt, Left, Line spacing: single, Don’t adjust space between Latin and Asian text, Don’t adjust space between Asian text and numbers, Style: Quick Style
I opened a new, blank document, and found that the Normal style is defined like this.
Font: (Default) +Body, Left, Line spacing: Multiple 1.15 li, Space After: 10 pt, Widow/Orphan control, Style: Quick Style
I selected all of the editor’s file, copied it and pasted it into the blank document. The apostrophes and quotes appeared correctly.
Next I started a new blank document, modified the Normal style as follows and then again pasted in the editor’s file:
Font: (Default) Times New Roman, 12 pt, Indent: First line: 0.5″, Left, Line spacing: Double, Widow/Orphan control, Style: Quick Style
I saved the file and closed it. When I next opened it the unwanted symbols (= A @ ) had returned.
I am drafting this in Word. I see now that the cut and pasted examples quoted above are in Shruti, but the symbols are in WP TypographicSymbo. That font doesn’t appear in the list of all fonts. The “WP” sends me back to something my editor wrote: “I just made the switch from WordPerfect to Word this year, and am still learning the ropes.”
I select All and make the font Times New Roman. The symbols remain but now they are in Times New Roman font. Using Replace I succeed in changing the equals signs to apostrophes. However when I adopt the same procedure to change all the A ‘s to double open quotes, all incidences of the letter ‘a’ are changed. This is a long document and I am reluctant to have to change the A ‘s one by one.
I’d be grateful for advice as to how to clean up this file.
