Clearing Google Chrome browser history

I have  been recommended to clear my Google Chrome Browser History. Are there any steps I should have been doing or should do before starting this? What do I lose in the process? If its a question of volume, can you just do a partial, starting with oldest first?- I see items dating back into  May 2022 which suggests there is a built in regulating mechanism since I have been using the computer for 10 years.

Is it better to use Google’s tools rather than say CCleaner?

Dell Studio XPS  Desktop running Win 7 64bit SP1, 12.0 GB memory
