I’m looking for a program whereby I can copy images to the clipboard and have them remain open on the screen so that I can deal with them.
I have found a number of clipboard savers that let you save images and be able to paste the contents later, but I need the clips to stay on the screen like in a window. Mac has a program that does this. Looking for one for Windows.

It’s helpful to know names of programs when doing searches to find similar programs. I have a Mac and haven’t seen such a program that came with it, might be available in the Apple Store.

If you have one of the later versions of Word you may be interested in its clipboard feature that can contain many more items than the Windows Clipboard, as many as a couple dozen. I haven’t tried it with images yet, just text.

For simple management of images I use Windows Explorer [Win7 and earlier] or File Explorer [Win8 and later] and set the view to Icons. Then I can delete those I don’t want or mark those to be moved.

There is a program in Windows which may meet your needs — Snipping Tool.

It doesn’t show you items in the clipboard; but it can stay open and show you what it has copied; and it is then easy to copy images from Snipping Tool to the Windows Clipboard — you simply click the Copy button at the top of the window.

You can have only one instance of Snipping Tool open at a time, so it may not meet your needs. The way I work around that limitation is to open a new document in Word, and paste the images into the new Word document. The nice thing about using Word in this way is that, once you have pasted an image into Word, you can stretch it to make it bigger, without hardly any loss in image quality.

If you don’t have Word, you can use WordPad to hold the images. But if you need to stretch them and make them bigger, they will lose quality if done in WordPad.

The program that my MAC friend is using is called Snappy, but in looking at it, it doesn’t work the same in Windows like Mac does. He can create multiple snaps and keep the all on the screen at the same time.
I have looked at clipmagic and it too only saves them and doesn’t allow them to stay on the screen. I have Ditto installed and it too is the same way.
I have been using the Windows Snipping Tool that comes with Windows. Just wish that it had an upgrade to be able to keep multiple snips instead of just one on the screen.

The clipboard in Windows has always been a simple feature; the rule is One Object Only. This helps with the user interface to the clipboard, which is also very simple indeed. And it’s something of a necessity given that you don’t normally see the clipboard. You only see the results of the clipboard.

It’s a curious thing really. Windows was specifically intended to be this highly visual environment and the G in “GUI” stands for Graphical. Yet the clipboard (by default, there are methods of visual interaction but you have to ask for them) does not normally work visually.

Many readers will know of the MS Office extension to the clipboard that allows multiple clipboard objects. This is great but it only works for Office. As soon as you leave the world of Office you are back to One Object Only.

I personally use the DITTO clipboard manager and find it very reliable and highly configurable.

Why do you need all the images to be stored on the clipboard? Save the images to a folder on the Desktop. You can then open them in an image editor as tabs or tiles. Alternatively, if your image editor hasn’t got that facility, you can open several copies of the image editor at the same time, displaying a different image in each, and arrange them as tiles.

Good question. The reason I need the multiple clips on the screen is to make financial comparisons and entries based on reports produced, then I’m done with that clip. I don’t need to save them in the clipboard necesssary, so it looks like the best thing to do will be to keep Word open and clip them into there to see all at once, then when done I’ll just close Word and I don’t need them any more. Ditto is good, but it won’t allow you to keep the clip UP on the screen while using it other than pasting it.

This may or may not help, but with DITTO a selected clip can be viewed in the clip editor (right click on the clip in the list or use Ctrl-E).

It will stay as a window until you close it. Just a thought.

That’s a good point, but that only works for text items, not a graphic image.

I FOUND IT!!! Greenshot is the best snag program out there and does EXACTLY what I was looking for. It allows for quick snags to stay on the screen with just the prt scr button. Ditto would only allow one image editor open at once. Check it out…

I am on Windows 10 and still use an obsolete program called Hotkeys from Shear Software. They are out of business as far as I can tell and the original program website is not longer in existence. But if you can find a download of Hotkeys 1.51 on a freeware/shareware download site somewhere, it still works – ableit with a few kinks.

For purposes of this thread, it provides multiple clipboards that you can choose with a configurable hot key combination.

Originally published in 1999 and still going. Further proof that the guts of Windows still works almost like it did in XP.

Have you tried Clip Cache? I have found this to be a VERY flexible ap. Assign and manage many clip folders … keep stuff around for years if desired. You can edit text clips and copy/paste them back into the source or a different destination. It DOES accept image clips and has no effect on the source page.
