Clone HDD to smaller SSD with Macrium Reflect

I am trying to clone my 1TB HDD to a 400GB SSD using Macrium Reflect (free version). There is sufficient space on the SSD to hold everything stored on the HDD. When I select the SSD as the drive to clone to, I receive the message “Not all copied. Insufficient space.” The HDD shows 5 partitions: System (FAT32), Unformatted primary, Windows (contains 123.85GB), WIndows RE Tools, and Recovery Image. The SSD shows two: Unformatted Primary, New Volume (NTFS Primary, 447.11GB). I thought Macrium Reflect could do this; am I wrong, or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

I’ve never cloned (or imaged) a drive to a smaller drive, so I can’t speak from experience, but this discussion on the Macrium forum may be useful: https://forum.macrium.com/Topic3908.aspx

Was the SSD empty? Is the default selection in the Clone dialog box’s Advanced Options section set to Intelligent Sector Copy?

Look at the hard drive’s partition list in Macrium, all of those partitions may not fit on the solid state drive even if only the used sectors are copied to the solid state drive. I do not know if there could be side effects if you choose to not clone the unformatted primary partition from the hard drive.

Contact the SSD’s manufacturer first
— If unhappy, search for “cloning HDD to a smaller SSD” and follow-up with a trusted, reliable company that claims to do that.

If your 400GB SSD is new, call the manufacturer for advice on how to do that in their system.
— Even if it isn’t new, call them anyway. If they don’t provide personal help, ask them for a KB article of their own.
