Combofix – heard of it + any good ?????

My neighbor wiped out his computer and in the process of trying to fix it came across a program called COMBOFIX which claims ” to clean your computer as clean as an angel’s underwear”.

I am only an experienced newbie and that is how I found the name of this program = by googling the quote above.

Has anyone ever heard of this program and is it any good ??????????
If you google COMBOFIX, it is apparently well known.
In 10 years of playing with computers, I had NEVER heard of this unlike the many OTHER malware programs that we all are familiar with.

Yes, it is commonly used with the help of a trained malware removal expert in one of the forums such as BleepingComputer, Geeks2Go, WhattheTech, etc…

It is developed and maintained by a guy who goes by the name sUBs. The program should not be run without guidance from someone who has experience with it. This is detailed in the post here.

Basically it should only be run when necessary after getting the proper diagnostic tools run to confirm infected. There are also many safeguards put in place but you need to know how to access them. Bottom line….if you think you’re infected, either pay someone for professional removal or get help in the forums for free if you wish.

Volunteer “Malware Removal Specialist” for use by similar Experts
and should be used under their supervision in case something goes

I hope this comes out in the right thread.

I am responding since someone asked WHERE I found this application .
I initially googled on “clean as an angel’s underwear” since that is the ONLY info my neighbor could give me . He forgot the name.
Then I got the name – COMBOFIX.
Then I googled COMBOFIX and found the BLEEPING COMPUTER site with tutorial as has been mentioned.

Good to know it is not rogue software.
Thanks for the caveats about using it.
