I’ve a client with a Comcast XP7 gateway. It’s running OK. Between the client’s networked devices and the gateway is an SPI firewall.

By putting the gateway into bridge mode its wifi is disabled, which is the client’s requirement. But when I test bridge mode with a Sony optical disc player using its own auto-configuration, it can’t connect to services like Netflix and Amazon Prime. My knowledge of these bits is rusty. Yes, if it’s needed I can populate the Sony configuration with custom media gateway and subnet IPs. I know from testing it that the box wants two different IPs for a media gateway.

What IP media server addresses should be reserved inside the firewall’s GUI to connect to outside media servers, to which the Sony box can point? And which subnet, yadda, yadda.

I’m imagining I’ll have to perform reservations for each of the other networked devices, too.

Merci buckets for your knowledgeable help.

It sounds like the Sony has not been granted an IP address.

Normally the ISP gateway/router will provide IP addresses, but not in bridge mode. You either have to configure the SPI firewall to provide the IP addresses or install another DHCP server on the network. Either way, you will need to add external DNS information so devices can find internet addresses. This can be your ISP DNS servers or 3rd party ones.

      cheers, Paul

Thank you, Paul. In addition to here, I’d posted on the Xfinicky fora and Reddit.

Someone on Reddit had the answer. I’d both called Comcast and tried “chat” with them. No one I communicated with knew what to do. And I figured the only other way to find out, other than asking on Reddit, Ask Woody, and the Comcast fora, was to bring a Comcast tech to the site. Happily that was incorrect 😁
