Comment Numbering in Office 2021

Sometime earlier this year (or late last year), there was a change in how Office handles comments inserted in a Word document; unfortunately, it affected both new and much older documents.

Currently, it shows the user name at the top of the comment and the date just above the reply box; there is no numbering of comments.  Previously, it included the comment numbering to precede the comment itself; this was particularly useful.

I’m guessing this happened in an update earlier this year and have been unable to determine how to enable the numbering again (this helps when speaking with the originator regarding specific comments/issues).  So, the question is how do I re-enable the comment numbering?

Actually, I use Office 2021 also. And for me nothing has changed — comments continue to be numbered sequentially.

Thank you for the quick turnaround and fix!  While I use the perpetual license, I noticed that certain features/elements had changed somewhat recently; your suggestions got me back to where it was before.  After turning off the revised version, your steps made it quite easy to get back to where I had it before.  Many thanks!
