How can I add a comment to an UNLOCKED cell in a PROTECTED worksheet ?
If this is a matter of how the protection is set up, which of the many categories do comments come under ?
    Thanks

      Martin,

Did you remember to unprotect the Cell?

I just tried the following test.

      1. New Workbook
      2. Through Cell Formatting unprotect cell F5
      3. Protect Sheet.
      4. Right click F5
      5. Select new Comment
        NewComment
      6. Enter Comment
        UnProtectedCellOnProtected-Sheet
      7. Save
      8. Click on cell to view comment
        UnProtectedCellOnProtected-SheetandWorkbook

Note: I ran a second test with the Workbook also protected with the same result.

Hmmm – the cell IS unlocked, but the “Insert comment” option isn’t there when the Worksheet is protected. Not greyed-out, absent altogether.
I should have mentioned that this is Excel 2010.

BTW, how can I snip the right-click dialog – it vanishes when I open the snipping tool !

To capture right click dialogues etc, click on the down arrow to the right of new. select a suitable delay, 3 seconds is normally fine, then right-click to get the menu. When it greys out and the cross appears to select what you want to snip, tooltips etc will still be there. I use it all the time!

To catch a right click menu with the Snipping Tool do this.

        1. Open the Application.
        2. Open the snipping tool and start your snip.
        3. Press Esc.
        4. Bring up the right click menu.
        5. Press Ctrl+PrtScr.
        6. Capture your snip.

RG: Thanks for all that, now solved – I had to tick “Edit objects” when setting the protection parameters. Now I can add and edit comments in an unprotected cell in a protected Worksheet 🙂

      Martin,

I just ran a test with Office 365 Excel and if I check “Edit Objects” I can add a comment to ANY cell protected or not on a Protected Sheet.

Unfortunately, I no longer have Office 2010 (just deleted it recently, drat!) to test. If I were you I’d double check that you haven’t enabled comments on protected cells also.

      Thanks again !

It DOES allow comments on proteected cells, but I expected that and am OK with it – it is the formulas that I especially need too protect (from accidental, not malicious) tampering.
