A Compaq 2275 running WIN 98 – when you shut the system down – it restarts immediately. Only way to shut it down is pull the plug?? Any ideas??

AskWoody LoungerApril 3, 2002 at 2:55 pm #580247Have you tried going into CMOS and disabling to Power Saver feature? Also, if you are running Win98 you may have trouble because of the number of mapped drives or peripheral devices that Win98 is disconnecting from during shutdown.
If all else fails, create a shortcut to this and it WILL shutdown the pc.
c:windowsrundll.exe user.exe exitwindows -

AskWoody LoungerApril 8, 2002 at 8:25 pm #581206The shortcut should read RUNDLL32.exe,user,exitwindows – make sure that you have the commas in there, and are referencing RUNDLL32 and not RUNDLL.
All this shortcut does is to invoke the same function as the start menu’s shutdown command from an icon – but it may work since it doesn’t involve EXPLORER.EXE in the process of getting there.

AskWoody LoungerApril 8, 2002 at 8:46 pm #581215Zoinks! I screwed up the text. So much for memory, eh?
It should read: %systemroot%RUNDLL32.EXE user,exitwindows
The first comma was incorrect – hence the “file not found” message. Oy. If you’re curious, I stumbled onto this handy dandy reference on the web, which details many of the available options that can be referenced with this command.
