Computer Freezing

I know absolutely nothing about Vista but a friend has a laptop running under the Vista OS. The computer has been running slowly and now it is freezing up and sometimes takes maybe 5 minutes to close a window. A virus scan has been run and found nothing. A defrag has been run. Temporary Internet files have been deleted. I suggested a “chkdsk /r” be run and so far nothing has helped. I thought of suggesting an “sfc /scannow” but don’t know if that can be run on Vista especially since there is no operating system disk that came with the computer. Any ideas or suggestion of what could be causing this slowness and freezing and how to correct it would be appreciated. Also can the “sfc /scannow” be run and if so does it have to be run from a certain folder?

Do you notice a lot of disk activities?
What is the CPU activity?
Which processes take most of the CPU?
More than one anti-virus?
How much RAM? Size of the pagefile.sys file at the root of C:
% of free disk?

I have no idea but I will forward these questions and get as many answers as possible. Not sure how to tell them to find the answers to the CPU questions though. I think the Resource Monitor should do it. I’ll get back when I have answers.

Hi and welcome

You can also explain to your friend that he needs to look in event viewer. Tell Him to
type eventvwr in search go to the windows log>apllication tab.
he needs to look for errors that have app hang, aap crash, or app freeze.

IE is one of the things that freeze like that first.

when he finds the errors tell him to look at the event ID and source

If they are event ID 1000 and source 100 the problem is usally something called DEP

It is in the system control panel>advenced>performance It should not be set to all

I know thats a lot of info to impart but if it is that its an easy fix
