I’m helping out somebody with a flakey dial-up connection. When it connects the speed is reported as 44KB/s. I feel the problems lie with the modem settings, because more often than not there’s an excruciatingly long handshake with much hiss at the end, then a connection failure. It’s been a long time since I ventured into wonderful world of dial-up and I’ve only come up with setting modem speed to 57600 max. and using the init string AT+MS=V34 (at the advice of the ISP).

I can get a “clean” connection dialling from my 33.6 External on my own computer. She could also get consistently clean reliable connections on her old computer using a D-Link 56K external.

Before I embark on my “mercy mission”, I’m wondering if there’s anything else to try or check on. O/S is XP Home 2002, upgraded with SP3 and IE7.

Is this at the same location as your friend/customer? It could be a bad telephone connection/modem cable. It may be worth taking your external modem to check this out.

I think her phone line is OK, since “She could also get consistently clean reliable connections on her old computer using a D-Link 56K external.” Also, when the new setup does connect properly, the handshake is much quicker & crisper. I have no idea if there are “bad connection” issues wrt an internal modem though, or what to look for if there are.

Ah, yes – a bit of an unreliable page-to-eye connection on my part there grin

All I can think of is maybe a problem with the connection cable between the modem card and the telephone point. Does it lie close to a mains cable?
Is it worse at certain times of the day? (It may be just a busy connection – I can imagine ISPs cutting back on their conventional incoming lines as more and more users switch to broadband.)

And presumably the drivers are up-to-date?

yep All of those points are worthy of checking. Again though, I doubt it’s a congestion/ time-of-day issue, since she claims to have always had flawless connections with the old box. (She even had to ask, “What’s a dropout?” laugh)

As to the drivers, I let Windows select from its own SP3 range. I don’t know if it’s up to date, so that warrants further checking.

            Thanks for the hints.

Could it be a case where the modem “standards” differ between the ISP and the PC with the problem?

It has been ages since I’ve looked at the various specs, but wasn’t there a Hayes Compatitble, vs. “something else” at one time?
