Hello everyone, I need to update win7 with the security only updates. I have not had any updates since December (2016) so I’ve missed everything from January until now.
I’m a noob at all this stuff. I’m wondering if all the updates I missed are safe to install? I didnt get to see all the ms defcon ratings and now im pretty confused on how to go about getting these missing security only updates.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

First step I would recommend would be to ensure you have done a backup before starting. Use AKB2000003 for links to Windows 7 update, choosing either 32-bit or 64-bit as you need. Do one update at a time, in order. Also remember to do the IE updates, which became separated from the main updates in March.

GuestJuly 2, 2017 at 3:32 am #122951Thank you this helps me alot. Would I need to get the IE updates? I never use IE at all. Also is there a way for me to check each updates individual defcon rating? I know it shows the current patches Ms defcon at the top but is there a list or something of past defcons that show what stage they got to?

ManagerJuly 2, 2017 at 3:41 am #122956Re updating IE, this is what you need to remember:
Yes, it is important to keep IE up to date even if you are not using it because it is an integral part of the operating system and other processes use it.
No, there isn’t a list relating MS-Defcon to specific updates – it primarily works by date. Searching KB numbers (use the box in the panel on the right) will give you access to information that may be of help to you, and you can click on topic tags for relevant KBs too (looking above the first post, this page shows “Tagged: Group B” as example).

GuestJuly 7, 2017 at 6:42 am #123696hi again i think i made a dumb mistake. according to that akb 2000003 link you provided, woody says that the security only updates must be installed in chronological order. i just realized im missing December, does this mean i need to uninstall all of them and restart from October? will it not work correctly by just installing the missing December update?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 7, 2017 at 9:43 am #123740Not the December Update. The January Update has turned out to consist of only one component, making it supersedable by later Security Only Updates – as an exception to the rule of Security Only Updates being non-cumulative. The January 2017 Security Only Update cannot, and need not, be installed with any later (i.e. March, April, May, June 2017) Security Only Update present.
Regards, VZ

AskWoody_MVPJuly 7, 2017 at 8:11 am #123724The installation order of the security-only updates shouldn’t matter, but as PKCano mentioned, if you don’t do them in chronological order, you may get this message for some of the updates, which isn’t a problem but might be confusing to some people.
