On my Windows Home Server 2011, the only keyboard I have available has a PS2 connection (purple).

I thought that I ought to be able to connect using a conversion plug (green), female PS2 to USB. But, it doesn’t work.

Yes, I know that I ought to be able to connect via Remote Desktop Protocol, but there are times when I want to be able to deal direct with the WHS box.

What am I missing on the business of connecting the purple plug keyboard via the green conversion plug? Do I have the wrong connector?

I’ve not had success going from PS2 to USB, only the other way.
A cheap / second hand keyboard may be your best bet.

I use an adapter which looks just like this oneto connect my old-time IBM PS/2 keyboard to a USB port. I believe mine is a Belkin.

Here is another one which is a lot cheaper.

My experience has been that it has worked perfectly every time.

I believe the difference between this one and what you are using is that my cable has the electronics built in, whereas yours doesn’t.

If the adapter physically allows you to connect the two things, then the configuration of it is correct at least. But not all keyboards and adapters are created equal. I can recall a situation years back where a similar setup would not work for me. You can try buying another adapter but are probably better off just getting a cheap keyboard (e.g. EBay, thrift shop) since you won’t use it that much.

Yes, keyboards are cheap, and that’s probably the way to go.

      Thanks, all, for your replies.
