connecting to an .xls file

I need to have a table lookup info from an .xls file. I used the database connection wizard, and told it to look for my .xls file. The wizard successfully found the file, and created the connection. But the results returned are the row headings, not the data itself. I attempted to use different filter rules, and tried no filters at all. The same thing happens no matter how I try it. Only row headings are displayed.

hmmm…. are you using rows or columns for your data layout in excel? when you set up the connection wizard, did the correct headings appear?

I am using rows, with the headings at the top. I also have named ranges set up, because someone told me I had to have that done. And, yes, the correct headings showed up.
