• Connection to Web gets lost

    Hi โ€“

I have suddenly had trouble with staying connected to the Web via my NETGEAR setup (which was configured for us). If I do a Repair, I still get kicked off after a very few moments.

Is it possible from the information below to suggest a correction? Many thanks.

    NETGEAR: WG111v2 54Mbps Wirelss USB 2 Adapter

I tried changing some configurations via Netgear wizard.

The settings on PC that has the Router attached are (and which doesnโ€™t get kicked off today [yet?]but did yesterday):

    Settings:
    Profile: Default
    Network: Any*
    Network type: Access Point
    Security: Disable

    Under About:
    Driver version: 5.1213.6.327
    Driver date: 5/27/06
    MAC address: 00:18:4D:BB:B8.F3
    IP Address: 10.0.16
    Smart Wireless Utility verson: 2

    *The Network is CalmBeforeTheStorm
    The other choices are:
    Apple Network
    Cyprus
    Penthouse
    917f
    07B402744463

The signal strength is Good or Very Good

On computer that gets kicked off:
Settings shows same choices (should it be computer-to computer?)

    Networks:
07B40274463 is highlighted. The others are Cyprus, Penhouse Grahamโ€™s wireless, Linksyshr

CalmBeforeTheStorm is not listed in Find a network, but when I right-click Netgear icon, it shows CalmBeforetheStorm-???

Sometimes the icon will show a yellow ball and Acquiring Network address. The Window that popped up said there was no problem with that connectionโ€ฆ.

When I AM connected, the signal strength is Low or Very Low

It’s a reasonable guess that this is your problem.

Are the two PCs in different places? Can you move the one with the low signal nearer to the Network Access Point?

        Hi, Stuart

Yes, they are in different places and, unfortunately, I cannot move either one.

        Thanks for your suggestions,

Is there any possibility of running an Ethernet cable so you don’t have to use the wireless?

Your only alternative is to use a different type of Wireless connection, for example by moving to one of the draft 802.11n devices. This would mean having to change your Wireless Access Point and the wireless card on the PC.

            Morning, Stuart –

Again my thanks for your responses. I will have to wait for a guru-type person to further examine your suggestions.

            Appreciate your time,

Being that it is using a USB adapter it may not be waking up when the machine goes to sleep. This is a known and on going issue with USB devices.

        Hi, Dave –

        Thank you for replying.

Even though I do get a signal, albeit very low, that can indicate the adapter may not be waking up?

        Back to studying my problem.

The Network Name has to be identical for both PCs. Correct?

        Thanks, Curious

Can we assume from the comment in your original post “I have suddenly had trouble with staying connected…” that your setup was previously working fine ?

      Paul

      • #1110307

Yes, Paul, that is correct. No problems until this past Thurs/Fri.

(Perhaps once a month prior to this I would have to use Repair, but after so doing, the signal strength was fine.)

      Where are you seeing?

What type of router are you running?

      Edit.
I think the above list is a list of wireless networks that your USB device is seeing. What is the name of you network that you have set up?
You may be connecting to a neighbors connection and will get kicked off when ever they shut down.

        Hi Again, Dave –

I’m seeing CalmBeforetheStorm when I hover over the the icon in the Tasktray.

I saw the other names, in addition to Calm, in Netgears Network tab.

I was able to get online this morning via Repair. Now when I try that, ” Windows couldn’t finish repairing because the following action cannot be completed. Connecting to the wireless network.”

I had checked earlier w/Device Manager and the Network Adapters (Broadband 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and NETGEAR) were both working properly.

        The router = Verizon.

Re Network Name: I picked default. I did not notice its prior name, if it had one, other than default. Where does one get that Name, if not from the list offered by Netgear. And, do both PCs need the same network name? They both do have the same name.

The PC that is causing my problem is the one in the 2d office, the one without the router, if that makes sense. The PC in the room w/router is working fine.

Since only one PC gets kicked off, it doesn’t seem likely “You may be connecting to a neighbors connection and will get kicked off when ever they shut down.”

Thanks for helping me keep my remaining wits!

I have moved this thread from the Hardware forum to Networking your home, as it is clearly a home network problem.

      My connection is fixed!!!

With the help of a customer support person at Verizon, what we did was:

Control Panel/Network connections. Right click Wireless Network connection, click View availableโ€ฆ

Selected one, entered the WEB from the router’s label, clicked apply and back in business.

I want to thank you all for your suggestions. It’s great knowing someone is “out there.”

      Curious

(The first call to Verizon on Friday ended up with being switched to NETGEAR. That’s when Network Name issue came up and they apparently didn’t know how this could be selected/changed, whatever. Today my heroine was at Verizon. No need to be switched. I am, of course, writing Verizon with praises for her.)

Now that you are connected, are you using your modem and router or someone else”s that you see from the neighborhood?
In your statement “selected one”, how did you determine that you select the correct one?

        • #1110326

Yes, it is our modem and router.

I selected a network from among those offered in the View Available list. After entering the WEB and clicking apply, “Connected” appeared next to the selected network. It appears to be the correct one because, so far, I have had no problems, the strength right now is Very Good.

I choose the one with the most signal strength. The woman at Verizon said if one choice won’t work, choose another from the list. She was on the telephone with me while I was doing this: I told her which Network I was selecting. She had no problems with any of them, apparently.

Now to test things out. Turn OFF the modem/router and if you go off line you have yours, if not you are connected to the neighbor’s machine.

When I set up a modem or router I will NOT use any of the default names, I make one up that will stand out as mine. I do the same for networks and computer names. I just love going down the street finding all the “Brand named” connections including Apple and then finding a network named “Workgroup” and then I can even use their printer. But I need to knock on the door to get the printed copy.
