If you regularly have to go into the properties dialog of your printer because you want to print a draft or change to print 2up copies, etc. simply add a printer that is the same as the original printer and then change its default properties.

Be sure to give it a distinctive name to avoid confusion with the original printer and make the most used one the default printer.

I have this setup for my HP laser (1. Standard settings, 2. Prints 2up layout – to save on paper for perusing lines of VBA code, etc.) and a Canon inkjet (1. High quality paper, 2. Plain paper – draft copies)

When printing, I simply select the correct printer–they are named for their function–and save having to revisit the relevant printer’s properties dialog to change it!

For those on a network: this worked fine in Windows 98 with our networked printers, but I can’t seem to do it with Windows 2000. Oh well, I can ask my friends in IT to set it up on their end instead…

      Hi Leigh

      Going a little further…
First, go to Southbay Software and download Printer Express. Unfortunately it is no longer free, but is well worth the $12.00US asking price, IMHO.
Set up (install) a separate printer ID for the various sizes of paper and/or orientations that you commonly use. Give each an appropriately descriptive name.
Now you can select the printer and printer setup, at any point in your computing session, with 2 clicks on your mouse. (It changes your ‘default’ printer on the fly.)
I’ve been using it several times daily for well over a year on both a full office lan with server, router, etc (printers on several computers) and on a two computer P2P hookup with a printer on each.

      Have a Great day!!!
      Ken
