I am trying to help my friend who has a problem with his Dell computer. He has had the computer for a number of months. Recently, the computer has developed an annoying constant, continuous machine gun-like clicking sound when one goes to a new website. The same sound is heard when one plays a song with WMP.

The sound is the Windows NavigationStartnew.wav
    Control Panel>Sounds>
    Hit drop-down arrow
    Windows NavigationStartnew.wav

The temporary cure is to remove the speaker plug from the back of computer and reconnect it. However, when the computer is re-booted, the continuous clicking sound begins again. Dell has already replaced the motherboard. My guess is that it is hardware-related, but I could be wrong. Any suggestions?
    Thank you very much.

What version of Windows? I wanted to hear what this sound is, but my XP machine doesn’t have a file that remotely resembles the name you mentioned. I agree with you that it sounds like a hardware problem, and so far I don’t know what to look for.

Thank you for responding. It’s Vista. The machine is about 9 months old. It’s exasperating. My friend was lucky in ascertaining that removing and replacing the plug temporarily solved the problem.

Not even Windows Navigation Start.wav? – it’s one of the most annoying and pointless sounds I’ve come across!

Seems to be used by IExplorer when navigating back and forward in web pages.

Thank you for responding. Do you agree that this is hardware related? If so, should we be looking at the motherboard or perhaps the sound card?

If it’s what I think then all you need do is go to your control panel>sounds and select the Windows Navigationstartnew.wav as you have already done and then the drop down arrow (see Leifs screen shot) and the first item = “select none” and no sound will be associated with that action. Somebody wiser than me will have a different solution if I’m completely misunderstanding your problem.
