Based on a recommendation on this site, I recently activated Controlled Folder Access Protection. I am running Windows 10 (22H2). Since activating this feature, I getting quite a few error messages daily related to it. They all say “Windows Security, Virus & Threat Protection, Unauthorized changes blocked” followed by the name of the application for which access was blocked. So far, there have been four different ones of these: AdobeIPCBroker.exe, Elements Auto Creations 2019.exe, Sunset Monuments 3D Screensaver.exe and Updater.exe. The first two of these appear to be related to Adobe Photoshop Elements 2019. I usually receive messages on these multiple times daily. The second is one of a series of installed screensavers. I’ve only received this one twice. I have no idea what the third one is and I’ve only received this one once.

I don’t know the purpose of the blocked apps or why they are being blocked. Adobe Photoshop is NOT running when these errors occur. Are these errors something I should be concerned about, and if so, what should be done? If not, is there any way to stop them?

Personally I find CFA annoying and unnecessary for a personal machine. Of course YMMV!

I backup regularly to another device and don’t run dodgy software. No need for CFA here.

So, it appears there are two votes to disable CFA.  Not sure what is meant by “back up to another device.” Do you mean another computer or to an external disc drive or something else?

Is there a downside to disabling CFA?

Another device = not on the same computer. What you use is up to you.

CFA has no upside unless you get ransomware and CFA actually prevents data loss – I don’t trust an “on box” solution if the machine has been compromised.
Turning it off will not stop anything working.

      cheers, Paul

Does a removable external disc drive which is not normally connected to the PC count as “not on the same computer”? Just want to be clear on this.

Yes, as long as you don’t connect it while the malware is messing with your files because it will mess with the backup as well.

          cheers, Paul

Thanks for all the advice on this topic. I have decided to turn of the CFA.
