For some unknown reason I had missed Newsletter # 269 and but I discovered it and read it this morning.
I, like Steve O’Keefe, fought the icon sort problem for years until I discovered a small FREE program from stardock.com ( http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/ ) called “Fences.”
This little program has finally solved my icon sort problem AND keeps them organized on my desktop. There is the free version that I used initially, but the “Pro” version is well worth the small investment.
If you try it, you will be hooked.

I’ve use Fences for quite sometime and it works very nicely. You have the ability to “fence” related icons together and give that particular fence its own specific name, example one could be labeled Misc, one could be named Downloads, Technical Sites, etc. Works great. You can also double click the desktop and all icons will disappear, double click again and they are back. Best thing is they have a FREE version which I use along with a Pro version. If you have a lot of items on your desktop you should check this out. I’m pretty sure I found this program from Secret’s newsletter. http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

If all a person needs is to back up the icon locations on the desktop, and then restore them to the original layout should they get scrambled, then the free DesktopOK will do this. Either GUI or command-line. Unfortunately, the documentation needs some interpretation skills!

I’ve been using a free utility from DesktopOK for over a year now – http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/DesktopOK – it will save & restore on demand and if you switch resolutions you can save for each one.

To fix desktop icons that have become corupted try the following batch file. Copy and paste into Notepad, then save as a .bat file:
