Converting Excel graphs to jpg (MS Office 2003 Basic Edition)

I am having extreme difficulty converting graphs I have produced in Excel into the jpg format required by my publisher. In fact I have no idea how to do it, and have resorted to asking various designer-type people to do it for me, but have always found that text was lost and/or the size and proportions of the graph changed – which may be something to do with the fact that designers usually work on Macs, though I’m not sure. I cannot believe it should be such a problem. Can anybody tell me how to save an Excel graph as a jpg while keeping the size/proportion the same, and while retaining all original data? Alternatively, I have been able to save as the OpenDocument Drawing (.odg) format used in StarOffice Draw, so can anybody tell me how to convert this format into jpg? Help required urgently!

Hi there,

A great favourite of the Lounge is Irfanview software. A quick copy and paste into the application and you have a graphic.

Excel graphs use minimal colours so it would be best to save as GIF format which uses 256 colours (hence file size is smaller)

You can do this in VBA. For example:
– Select the chart.
– Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
– Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
– Type the following, substituting the file name you want (you can also specify the path if you wish):

ActiveChart.Export "Test.jpg", "JPG"

– Press Enter.
That’s it!

Note: a .jpg file is just a picture, it doesn’t contain the original data.

As if you don’t already have enough suggestions, you can also copy the graph and paste it into PowerPoint. When saving from PPt, you can choose from several graphic types from the ‘Save As Type’ drop-down to save an individual slide as a graphic file.

Another way is to use the elusive camera tool, which is built in to XL, but not well known to Jo public.

After taking a snapshot of the desired range, just paste into a graphics program and save in whatever format you like.

BTW, I’d suggest .GIF or .PNG over JPEG.
