COPIED FILE (Excel 2000)

I created a file in MY Documents. I dragged and copied this file to a second folder. I can access the file in MY Documents with no problems. When I try to open the file in Folder Two It opens as a Read Only file with the message that it is locked.for editing. The computer keeps telling me that the file is being used by another. I closed it and rebooted but I still can’t edit the file without saving it with another name.

Right-click the file in the other folder (in Windows Explorer).
Select Properties from the popup menu.
Make sure that the Read-Only check box is clear.

What happens if you create another copy of the original file? Does the same happen again?

Right click on the folder and then choose properties. Is the Read Only box checked there?

Is folder two on a network server? If so, the server may need to be rebooted, or the administrator may need to fix it.

I just copied and pasted the second file (the one that opens as a Read Only file) to another folder. It opens and is not a Read Only file. So I copied a Read Only file that’s editable yet the file that I copied is still a Read Only file.??

Yes I did. So the situation now is I have three files. One is in MY Documents one is in a Temp file. Both are editable and not locked. The second file is still locked and uneditable unless I save it with a new name. It also cannot be erased.When I tried to erase it and the message says it is being used by another.. How can I erase this file and recopy the file in the temp to this folder?

There are free utilities that can be used to delete files that refuse to be removed by normal means, for example Dr. Delete and Unlocker.

A thank you is in order from me too because I did a search for my problem and found this thread. AND the reported success with Unlocker is encouraging. It wasn’t my file or computer, but I was helping someone else. I don’t think he got into that pickle in quite the same way, but who knows.

He’ll be thrilled there’s a way around the problem, although I personally would love to know how it happened. Oh well, it’s probably one of those things that are harder to find out why than it’s really worth. After all, why else did we invent the word WORKAROUND.
