As far as I know nobody has found a way to color the tabs in a workbook for versions of Excel prior to 2002. XL 2002 does support different colors for each tab.

For sub totals use the SUBTOTAL function with th efollowing syntax :

      =SUBTOTAL(Function, Range)

where Function is one of the following values :

      1 AVERAGE
      2 COUNT
      3 COUNTA
      4 MAX
      5 MIN
      6 PRODUCT
      7 STDEV
      8 STDEVP
      9 SUM
      10 VAR
      11 VARP

e.g. to count the items in a range use =SUBTOTAL(3,Range)
