svchost.exe intermittently uses up to 99% of CPU time on my W2k SP2 system. This usually occurs when I wake the system from Standby. Sometimes it only happens for a few seconds, other times it goes on for minutes, and a restart is the way I clear the “issue”. BTW, two instances of svchost.exe appear in Task Manager, but only one of them is hogging the CPU. Running OfficeXP, etc, etc, Peer to Peer Networked (Xover cable) to a W2k SP2 notebook (notebook is hibernating most of the time). NAV 2001, TDS-3, Wormguard 3, RegProt, ZoneAlarm 2.6.88 (yes, I’m paranoid).
Any suggestions?

Since SVCHOST.EXE is a generic name for a process, it’s hard to tell what’s pegging CPU usage. You might try disabling apps that are not critical to operation – including NAV – temporarily. Re-enable or restart services one at a time until the problem recurs and then you know which is the offending applet or application.

Sounds like tedious work, and it might be, but it’s the only sure way to determine what is eating up CPU cycles. I have found that many apps and drivers do not properly support system standby, notably Creative Live!Ware, IntelliPoint, and NVidia’s graphics card drivers.

Thanks for your responses, Leif and Mark. The issue hasn’t raised it’s ugly head since my first post! It has never been consistent, so I’ve never got round to doing what you suggest, Mark. Being lazy. I’ll probably just resort to the restart workaround unless this problem starts showing up more frequently.
But perhaps someone else has found a culprit, and a solution?

Just as a matter of interest, the only references I can spot that may be relevant appear to have been fixed with SP2. Maybe you have re-applied it?
