I would like to create a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) from a Word XP document with many custom styles defined. I found a utility on Microsoft’s website called the Office 2000 HTML Filter 2.0 that allows you to export a CSS file based on a Word document. However, it only seems to work with Word 2000, not XP. Is there a similar utility available somewhere for Word XP, or is there a way to do this from Word XP. I have searched the Word help for CSS and it talks about attaching and detaching CSS’s, but nothing about creating them.

Any help would be most appreciated, I really don’t want to have to recreate all of these styles by hand if possible.

I don’t have Word2002 available right now to check it, but I think the “clean HTML” filter is included in the list of regular export filters (“Filtered HTML” or something like that).

      cheers Klaus

        Hi Klaus,

Thanks for your reply, but the problem is that Word XP’s filtered HTML feature doesn’t seem to create a separate CSS. In Word XP, the File Save As dialog includes an option to create filtered HTML, but all that does is remove the “Office” specific features from the HTML.

What I cannot figure out how to create the CSS. The HTML Filter utility for Word 2000 talks about having the option to export the CSS from a Word file, I find it hard to believe that Word XP doesn’t have the same capability.

There must be a way to export the styles from a Word document into CSS format, this seems like it would be a very useful feature.

I haven’t created many style sheets, but I have looked at a bunch of them. Wouldn’t whatever Word creates basically be the same as what appears between the and tags in the HTM files that Word creates? I realize that having a workaround doesn’t excuse a lack of functionality, but if I understand the situation correctly, at least you have a fallback.
