Is it possible to take a document stencil that contails all the shapes I use and to save it with a different name so that I can share it with others? If so, how would I do that? I see no ‘save as’ provision on the document stencil.

Can’t you just send them the .vss file (presumably from the My Shapes folder)?

Maybe but I cannot find a My Shapes folder. A search for *.vss does not reveal anything that could be taken as a document stencil.

We’ll have to wait for someone who actually has Visio then – I don’t blackteeth

If I right click a shape in Visio 2003 and it to a new Stencil, then Visio offers to create a VSS file in My Shapes, which is a folder under My Documents.
How did you create your document stencil?

I did not intentioanlly create the document stencil. I believe this happens automatically… Visio creates the document stencil containing all the shapes used in the document regardless of where they came originally. So the document stencil may contain some flow charting shapes, some map pieces, some plumbing shapes., and so on. Each document created will have its own document stencil with the shapes of that document.

What I wanted to do is to take the document stencil and save it as a vss but I do not know how to do this.

Sorry, I haven’t come across the idea of a “Document shape stencil” before. Where do you see this?

open any Visio document (drawing) then click on File – Stencils – Document Stencil

After some research, I found the answer. With the Visio drawing open, simply do a ‘Save As’ and choose .vss as the file type. It will save the doument stencil with the same name as your Visio drawing only with a .vss suffix – the original Viso drawing (,vsd file) is not altered in any way.

Thank you, I have now learned two new things about Visio today.

No thanks necessary, I am thrilled to be able to offer something back to the Lounge community – I have learned so much from everyone else here.
