Is it possible to create a “secure” message that cannot be forwarded by a recipient? Also, security setting within option are unavailable (grayed out)? Any thought would be appreciated. thank you. sb

Using standard Internet mail, no, you can’t control what the recipient does with the message. There is a company called Omniva (formerly Disappearing Inc.) that has a technology to control the lifespan of e-mail, but I don’t know whether it blocks forwarding.

One trick you can do is to create a form you can use to send a message where the recipient will not have the capability to reply, reply all and forward. Of course they can still send your e-mail as an attachment but at least they can not just select one of those options to spread your e-mail. You can do this by going to tools->forms->design a form. Select message. If you don’t see message, check the Look in field. Make sure it says Standard Forms Library. Go to the Actions tab. Disable the actions you want by double clicking on the action and deselecting the enable button. When done, go to to Tools->forms->plublish as. At the Look in field, select inbox. Give it a name then hit publish. You will get a long message. Select Yes. Close the form without saving. To use the form, go to the Action menu. At the bottom you should see the name of the form you just created. If you double click it, it will give you the same form you use when you send e-mail. However, when the recipient gets it, the actions described above will not be available either as a button or from the Action menu. Send a test message to yourself first to see what your recipients will see. Hope this helps.

An email message has the same problems that a web page has when it comes to securing content. Once you’ve put it out there, you have little or no control over what happens to the content. There’s an array of technologies available to extract content from the PC’s screen, from simple cut & paste to OCR programs. If it’s really for a particular person only, don’t use email. If the receiver wants to share the information with others, they’ll find a way.

To date, no one I know of has found a secure way to deliver web content that can’t be copied and/or altered.
