This is an invitation to create, in one place, a comprehensive list of dependable computing and Internet related security sites, and also those covering problems with operating systems, such as Krebs on Security, The Register and others. Particularly those that do not specialize on a certain operation system, but cover problems with Windows, LINUX and macOS as well. Looking in the “Code-Red Security Advisories” forum I have not found something equivalent, so I hope this proposed thread is not going to be redundant.

Hopefully he will try again. I quickly checked out the URLVoid web site, as I had never heard of it. I didn’t check out any of their utilities for malware, yet the types of utilities are intriguing.

Finally, about curating this list — making sure the links are appropriate and not affected by some kind of malware or belong to some phishing expedition:

I’ll check them out from time to time. Others could do the same and let me know if there are problems by, for example, sending me a message. If I do not respond quickly, because I might be away and out of contact, or for some other reason, please make a note next to the link to warn people until it is clear if is OK or not to use it.

Best ways of checking out I can imagine would be: to google the link and see what shows up; also hovering the cursor on the link to see that what says in the strip that pops up then matches what is in the link; etc.

It might be also a good idea to keep a list of recently edited links, much as there is a page for discussions accompanying all entries contributed to Wikipedia, for example here:

I miss payphones. I didn’t carry my home phone book with me everywhere I went because there was always another copy nearby. For looking up business and organizations on the World Wide Web, I use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (that’s the English link) like I formerly used The Yellow Pages. I figure any group interesting enough to have an article there, has probably checked the accuracy of the information listed. And they are more likely to update that site before tracking down lists on other sites. I have less concern over a spoofed link, but still use the hover check from habit. By keystroke copying the published address I feel assured it is clean, and I haven’t miskeyed. From their relevant entries, here is:

These were also sourced from their Wikipedia entries. While Wikipedia content may be questionable, using their local search function helps me cross reference subjects when I am not yet familiar enough to make connections myself. Then I can follow links to source material and read for myself.

Thank you so much. Yes, those are very informative Web sites and certainly belong here, even if they are mostly about other aspects of technology, besides security. My idea is to have a list of links that one can check out, see which are the most relevant to one’s interests, then copy, some of them, and bookmark them on a browser, as I have bookmarked, for example, Woody’s and ghacks in all my browsers.

To be very clear: this is not, in absolute, meant to deprecate the value of the important and needed work that people such as Kirsty, the Patch Lady, or PKCano assiduously do here, posting alerts and keeping us informed on issues we better pay attention to. And, to repeat what I wrote at the very beginning of this thread, I have started this because I have not found an equivalent list of links elsewhere in the appropriate forums here.

Just now, at the time of logging this entry, I have noticed that all the “Thanks” buttons are  missing in this thread. I imagine that is just one of the temporary glitches to be expected because this site is still transiting to a unified one with what was Windows Secrets.

Also: I don’t acknowledge edits until I decide that I am done making clear what I wanted to say in the first place. After that, yes, I’ll mark an edit, after making what I consider to be an important revision. But I’ll be the judge of that, and have always, and shall always, take my time before deciding when I am done, whatever it is I am doing

Remember that Thanks only show on other people’s posts, not your own? I’m not aware of a glitch in the Thanks button, and looking at GTP’s reply, it’s certainly not global. Could you please check again, and on other pages, and let us know if you see the same thing there too?

Re the edits you mention, it is hard not being able to preview posts before publishing them, but I would caution that edits can only be done in a limited timeframe after first posting (without moderator assistance), and if you keep the log of the last edit made, all the earlier edits are also logged at the same time.

What you know, all the “Thanks” buttons are back! So: an occasional and very temporary glitch, I would say.

One reason I do not log most edits is because I make lots of little ones, quickly one after another, correcting a word here, then another there; then fixing some awkward sentence, to make it say what I meant to… Occasionally I may forget to put something, a paragraph, maybe, in there I intended all along to be there, and so ten, twenty minutes later I’ll come back to take care of that… So far, I have not run the 30-minute clock and have had no problems with making new corrections. If something else occurs to me much later, then I might put that in a new entry.

Now, a question: is there a way to do something different from what I just described, but also without leaving a very long trail of “OscarCP” logos marking every last little, unimportat edit I’ve made? (That tend to be quite a few, almost always.) Thanks.

I’m a bit confused here. Where exactly are all these “appropriate sections” focusing on the security of different OSes and applications, so that one could contribute to their lists?

I have websites to suggest, but I don’t know what to do. The conversation seems to have gotten quickly sidetracked into talk about Thanks buttons, HTML, and edits to posts.

OK, but how does one add items to that list? Only you can edit your own post; is there a new wiki somewhere around here?

We might submit separate posts in this thread with new suggestions, but that would quickly become a royal mess with stuff scattered here, there, and everywhere up and down the thread.

This kind of idea works best if there is a single, organized place to put the information. Maybe a “KB”-type article would do the trick, but I’d be surprised if non-MVPs were allowed to create and maintain such an article here.

@oscarcp, please take me through the steps required to paste a web link “in the corresponding section OscarCP has so thoughtfully provided with a few others in this page, near the top of this thread, #328034“. How do I add a link to your post?

If that cannot be done (and I see no way to do it, nor would it be advisable), then links will and can only be added by submitting new posts. Three people will add, say, Windows-related links, then the next one a Linux security-related link, then two more add Windows links, then someone else adds a browser link, followed by yet another Windows link and a Linux link. Before you know it, looking through the list for the links related to a specific category becomes like looking for the raisins from the bowl of raisin bran that spilled on the floor: they’re all over the kitchen.

The idea of having a list of security websites for various software categories is excellent, but–to be useful–the list needs to be well organized. Maybe an MVP who’s interested can offer to maintain a KB article and add the suggestions submitted in this thread as they get posted.

@OscarCP you are absolutely very clear and in understandable English too, thank you!

Keep in mind it can be usefull to search in the MSDN and other techsites from Microsoft, and the various NCSC sites, like NCSC.us NCSC.nl UK DE ++.  Sounds weird for some people but looking into FBI NSA Interpol and foreing services can be very informative too.

OK, here is what I am going to do:

The page where I wrote the sections with spaces for people to paste link to useful security-related Web sites has gone older than 30 minutes since I created it and now cannot be edited further to put those links there. So… just post entries where you include the link plus some explanation as to why you think it is OK to put it in the list.

Then, maybe once a week, I’ll go around, picking those links up and pasting them in a page just like that dead one, along with all the things already in that one, and add this new page as an entry at the end of this thread. So, the last entry will be the latest, for a while. Because it will not remain the last for long, as people keep making entries of their own, so you’ll just have to look for it. It will be dated, so you’ll know which of the no-longer editable pages is the last one…

Fred: That thing from me you copied there is the plan right now. But things might be worked out differently — and better — in the end: something like a Knowledge Base on several OSs security might be kept here with help from higher up… Faint possibility, nothing certain about that, right now. We’ll see.

I think it’s a great idea.

Put together the list as you would like to see it (Google docs is best, but Word or even email will do) and email it to me. I’ll post it as an AKB, with a discussion section attached.

Then when you have updates, email them to me and I’ll update the AKB.

You might want to get Susan Bradley involved. She has a whole lot of experience with this – but not a whole lot of time.
