• Creating mde files (Access 2000)

I have several application db’s ( no data tables – only linked tables) that I create mde files for deployment to users. I’ve noticed that the mde file sizes are nowhere near as small as they ought to be. We recently upgraded to Office XP sp2 as the operating system on our desktops. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but it seems like before that upgrade, my mde file sizes were much, much smaller. One of my key apps is 15.7 megs and the mde only shrunk to 14.2 megs. I was used to seeing mde files that were at most half the size of the mdb files.

Has anyone run into this before? Is there something in code I should look for?

    Thanks! confused
    Mike

You can only create .mde databases in Access 2002 if you use Access 2002 format; it can’t create .mde databases in Access 2000 format.
The file size of an Access 2002 format database is considerably larger than that of the equivalent Access 2000 database, so perhaps that explains the difference.

        Hans –
Thanks, but the databases are Access 2000 databases. We have Office 2000 on our desktops. We only upgraded the operating system to Office XP. I didn’t think that should make a difference, but it’s the only thing I can think of that’s different. Any suggestions on troubleshooting the size? I guess I could create a new db, import the objects and create an mde after each import to see if I can isolate the problem to a particular object … what do you think?

Office XP is not an operating system. I think you mean Windows XP. That shouldn’t affect the size of .mde files – the code to create an .mde is contained in Access, not in the operating system.

Creating a new database and importing object from an older database into it is a good idea, I would certainly try it.

Yeah Hans, sorry – it’s been one of those days… Thanks!!
