PKCano – Although we’re in Group A for my wife’s important SOHO Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine, I sometimes install your Security Only (“SO”) Group B patches while we wait for Defcon 3 for the big Group A patches.

Right now, are there any problems with the latest SO patches

    Mar 2018 KB 4088878
    Mar 2018 (IE11) KB 4089187 ?

    Thanks again!

You are free to install updates any time…

It sounds like you are thinking there might be fewer problems with the Security Only updates, because they don’t include as many parts. However, you would be volunteering to test your theory for the rest of us. Security Only updates still need time for the early adapters/automatic updating beta testers to try first. Since fewer people are using Security Only updates, it might take longer for any potential problems to be detected and reported.

Susan Bradley regularly updates the Master Patchlist with reported problems, so if you are inclined to install updates ahead of the Defcon level change, check that out so you can make a more informed decision for yourself:

You can look at Microsoft’s list of issues for a given Windows 7 update at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4009469/windows-7-sp1-windows-server-2008-r2-sp1-update-history.

Windows 7-64Pro_SP1 group B for the monthly Security Only and the IE via the Catalog, but for the rest (.NET and Office 2010, I get via WU.

I know I saw it somewhere, but I initially (for a day or less) was offered 2018-03 Monthly Rollup – KB4088875. It now does not even appear. I did not hide it or install it.

My Intel motherboard has both the Intel® 82567L and Intel® 82574L Gigabit Ethernet Controllers onboard. These both are listed as apparently being vulnerable to having the NIC settings wiped by the March Rollup AND Security Only patches.

Intel has just released new drivers for these controllers, but the controllers are in Legacy status so you are SOL for help with Intel. Reading on Reddit and other spots the VB Script that was used for a similar situation with the Convenience rollup, is being recommended as a fix by MS. It is mentioned in the 2 KBs as issues. However folks are reporting that the VB Script is only effective 50% of the time.

My main question is if the KBs are not offered on WU at present, will they ever be, or would a fix come next month. However with a Security Only, NOT being a rollup, what is the implications for a Group B to miss a problematic month.

I have no idea if the Intel NIC driver release on 2/22 was to fix the March issues, but the timing is interesting. NIC drivers are ones I usually avoid unless they are security patches, which is what Intel recommends – if it ain’t broke, etc., etc.

      Thanks

Sure seems like a lot of darts being heaved at Win7, but I am sure it is purely an accident.
