Customizing Toolbars (Office 2000)

I hope this is an easy question. I am just wondering if the toolbars are automatically custmomized/minimized the way the Menus are.

I understand the menus in Office 2000 shrink/minimize to show only those options used most frequently. This is a setting in Options, I believe.

Do the toolbars work the same way? If you do not use a button on a toolbar for awhile (or frequently) does the button automatically return to the “Add/Remove Buttons” menu?

I thought it was a similar situation because certain buttons were part of the default toolbar but didn’t necessarily appear.

Ah, I just recalled, I have that feature disabled, so I do not know what it does with the built-in toolbars/menus.

I like to have everything displayed, so my few remaining brain cells are not strained trying to recall, where an item might have been hidden.

As far as I know only the MENU’s are personalized.

I skipped version 2000, so I’m commenting on version XP’s personalized menus and toolbars…

The toolbars can also “personalize” or hide tools based on infrequency of use. They only do that, however, when they run out of room, like when the Standard and Formatting toolbar share the same row. Tools you use most often will move to into view and the others will hide. There is a double arrow at the right of the toolbar which reveals the hidden buttons.

But if there is enough room to display all the tools on the toolbar, they will not “personalize”, like menus.

Yes, but the toolbars do that anyway even if you disable the option for the menus.

The “Always Show Full Menus” option has nothing to do with “personalized” toolbars.

But you can change both settings in Office 2k and Office 2k2 by going to Tools, Customize. The option wording is slightly different in each. Basically if you have the Standard and Formatting toolbars on separate rows, you’ll have enough room to display all of the buttons without some being shoved off into the right-hand nether world (unless, of course you have your resolution set really low, or have a very small monitor or something).

Yep – if “Show standard and formatting on two rows” is checked, you will probably have enough room to see all of the toolbar buttons, and won’t need to worry about them disappearing or re-ordering on you based on your use.

I have a related question! How can I TURN OFF the annoying personalized menus. I go into Tools/Customize and un-select the option. But when I exit and return to any Office 2000 program, the stupid personalized/most used feature has turned itself back on! I want to see all menu options all the time. However Office seems to think I need otherwise…

What are you “unselecting”? You should be SELECTING (adding a checkmark) to “Always Show Full Menus”. At least that’s what it is in 2002.

In Office 2000, under Tools / Customize, “Menus show most recently used commands first” should be UN-selected to disable.

I have no idea what happened, but out of desperation, I went into Windows XP’s Accessibility Wizard and told it to turn off all personalize menus. Fixed!

The use of “Accessibility Wizard ” will do some real strange things to you system. Before using this wizard read up on what it will do. It will save you a lot of problems.
