i maintain a database in my volunteer job & do everything thru help files & logic, i admit that i don’t know anything serious about databases (vba is a blessing for us novices). can i cut an existing field in a table & paste it into a new, related table? i did it in a practice table & it looks ok, anything i should know about going on behind the scenes?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 8, 2002 at 11:39 pm #615075I don’t know what VBA has to do with it, but yes, you can copy a field in design view and paste it into the design view of another table without any problems. If you don’t know anything about databases, though, I would strongly suggest you learn .. quickly. Relational database design is somewhere between an art and a science, and bad design is the easiest to achieve and the hardest to live with.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 8, 2002 at 11:44 pm #615076There’s nothing in particular to remember except that, if you select the whole row in the table design view, then all of the properties set in the original field will come over with the field when it is pasted into the new table. The data will not come with the field. If you want the data to come over you could try copying the field rather than cutting it and then copying the data from the original table and paste it separately (although copying and pasting data in this way will paste the data in the same order as it was in the original table).
This will work between any tables, whether they are linked or not. If you are looking to ensure that data in the pasted field links in some way to the records in the new table then you may have to start looking at an update query to ensure that the link is correct.
