    Greetings,

My elderly Father got an email from stremail<at>microsoft.com, stating:

“Thanks for subscribing to Assure Software Support. We’re happy you’re here.

You’ll be charged the next recurring payment for your subscription soon. On Friday, September 24, 2021, we’ll charge $99.00 plus applicable taxes to your Visa **xxxx.

Your subscription will continue for 1 year unless you cancel at least two days before Friday, September 24, 2021.

To cancel or make other changes, sign into your Microsoft account to manage your subscription.”

I’m in the IT Biz but I mainly work with Business m365 customers, is this his subscription renewal to his personal 365 App rental, or is this something else? (I don’t have admin access to his personal account). He is certain he never signed up for “Assure”. Is this some kind of marketing “upsell”, kind of like those “fake” invoices for yellow page ads you may have seen arrive in the snail mail that look like an invoice (which we ignored), or is this a modern day equivalent of a long distance phone company “slamming” a customer?

That’s a genuine email address (unless spoofed): What is stremail[@]microsoft.com?

Assure Software Support is a Microsoft service that can be purchased via Microsoft Store in most countries, but is not directly related to Microsoft/Office 365:

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/store/b/software-support

I believe it’s likely to be a genuine message, so it was probably once an accepted option.

The subscription should show up in his Microsoft Account (as mentioned in the email), and that would be the place to cancel it if not required.

Apparently (if not spoofed) this is the Microsoft Store email, here’s part of the header, since this was forwarded much of the header gets stripped:

        —–Original Message—–
        From: “Microsoft Store” <stremail@microsoft.com>

I just find it odd that Microsoft would add on a service without the customer’s approval, imagine if you leased a car that the leasing company a year into your lease stated they were going to add an additional service to your lease payment – say Satellite Radio or roadside assistance, which was not part of the original agreement unless you opt out. Huh?

I very much doubt whether they did.

      What is “Assure” from Microsoft.

      What is Microsoft assure?
It is a assistance service on remote desktop. The Microsoft technicians connect to your pc and give assistance to the problems.
