dat file import problem

hi all!

Just the other day Access 97 started refusing to import from .dat files. (.txt files work fine) It tells me the database or object is read only, which is patently ridiculous and untrue. I’ve been doing the same download successfully for several years now, and for two weeks since my change to NT. I’ve been installing software during this time, but nothing new. Any ideas?

I had the same problem. It is the cause of applying the Jet Y2K patches. After the Y2K updates Access 97 no longer will accept anything other than .txt files with the Import command. To correct this I wrote some code that changes the files in the import directory from .dat to .txt. Then I run my import routine. Someone may have a cleaner method than this.
