I am using windows ME and Excel 97. I have a column headed date and have the following problem. I enter the date as 6nov03 and it comes out as 06-Nov-03 which is OK, but a couple of times the date comes out as 05-Nov. What can I do to get the complete date of 05-Nov-03?

I suspect that the cells that do not show the year are where you have not entered the year, i.e. only entered ‘6nov’.
To ensure the display is as you want, regardless of whether you type in the year or not:
Click on the column heading (to select the whole column)
Select Format/Cells/Custom
In the Type box type: dd-mmm-yyIf you omit the year when entering the date, Excel will assume the current year.

For a consistent format try and use the “d-mmm-yy”, or “dd-mmm-yyyy”, format across the column. The number of ds determine if you get 1-9 then 10-31 with one d, 01-09 and 10-31 with two ds, and then Mon-Sun or Sun-Sat with three ds, and with Four ds you get the name of the day spelled out. Same thing with the Ms for month.
I tried it, and it did not give me any problems, and I want to point out to you, that Windows ME is not a stable version of Windows as others, so it will be a good idea to upgrade.
