DDR? (IE 7)

I brought my own laptop to school. I am a teacher. The school has wireless internet. I tried to access a certain website (UN-objectionable) and a window came up with the following message:

“The requested document, http://www.manilowuk.com/Latest News.htm, will not be shown.

Reason: DDR score = 600. This page will not be displayed because it contains prohibited words or it has exceeded its tolerance of questionable words. ”

Part of the window had Symantec’s name on it. I felt that this had to do with the Department Of Education’s filtration. However, when I brought the laptop home, the same thing happened! This is most annoying!
Are there any explanations or solutions? I live alone. I do not need censorship, especially for an innocuous website.

This is a result of the filtering performed by Symantec Web Security . Obviously the school has installed this software. But why you would be experiencing the same restrictions once you leave the school network –

Edited to add: Just looked at the site which was blocked. What the heck is “objectionable” about that site?????

Thank you. I have tried Symantec’s support. It is a joke. And you are right; there is nothing objectionable in this website.I am perplexed. There must be something in the computer that is preventing me from going to this website. Where is it?

This is down to the settings of the DDR. There must be words in the link that has a high rating, try going to http://www.myspace.com[/url%5D and see if that is blocked. There are words like passion but it also has javascript that stops a viewing of the code, this last bit maybe a red herring but it is an idea.

I think you need to go here How to create a new list or dictionary in Symantec Web Security for starters and see if you can change it.

Thank you. I have no trouble going to MySpace on my own computer. However, the main issue is that I cannot access the Latest News page at home. I called up Norton. They had me remove Norton Internet Security to see if the problem still exists. It does. Therefore, Internet Security is not causing it. They sent me a link to Internet Security 2007. I’m installing it right now. There must be some setting that the school’s Symantec Web Security left in my computer. On Monday, I’ll have to call up tech support for Enterprize.

I would certainly suspect the school system of installing “something” on your system. I’m running NIS 2007 and have absolutely no problems. I was thinking about the “parental controls” in NIS, but in 2007, that’s not even installed by default. It is part of an add-on pack that the user must download and install. Hmmm…….

I think you might want to contact the IT department at your school. It sounds like that site was blocked by their server and that might have changed a setting on your firewall or Norton installation, thus preventing you from accessing the site from any location.

Is there any school policy that tells you not to bring in your own computer and log on to their network ???

Thank you for responding. When I uninstalled NIS 2006 I still could not get onto that page. I can get onto the main website. You suggested that something in my firewall changed. That would seem to make sense. The school does permit teachers to bring their own computers; the IT must put in the password so we can log on to their network.
This is perplexing!

P.S. Do I detect that some people on the boards are not Barry Manilow fans? I have seen him in concert 300 times. That was not a typo. 300.

It has reported a new strain of virus that plays some strange, and yes, frightening music from the internet. It’s called the Barry Manilow Virus – apparently it is a virus that is fast growing on an exponential scale…..It does have an issue where it scares users with such tunes as “Mandy” and “Copacabana.”

This is the very reason I have 10 AV programmes running

As of last night I can log onto that page. I don’t think I did anything to make a difference. It just happened. One of the IT people at my school was familiar with DDR. He suggested that if I had cleared my cookies and the History, that would have solved the problem. A friend of mine, a computer techie and also a teacher, was also familiar with DDR. He felt that something on that site triggered it. However, he offered no explanation as to why the problem remained at home. Another surprise: I tried going to that same page today using one of the school’s computers. It worked!! I was in shock.
I was told that these settings are made at the central office of the Bd. Of ED
By the way, I also called Symantec. A wasted call. The “techie” did not understand the problem at all and did not know what DDR meant.

Update: I called the Help Desk of the New York City Department of Education. They had no clue. I also called Enterprise Tech Support for Symantec. They could not help me because I do not have a Corporate program installed on the computer. I explained to Symantec that all I wanted was ti speak to a technician to see if they had any explanation. That was not possible. Probably I’ll never come o a full resolution but at least I can access the web page on my laptop.
